Hi there!

Decided to change the theme of the blog, for no reason. But the result’s great!

The theme I now use is included in the default WordPress installation so there are propably at least 305 525 blogs out there that look exactly like this one. Good for them – their blogs look awesome!

Changing the template flushed all widget settings so I also reorganized all the widgets that you can see on the right and at the bottom of the pages. Much more cleaner than before.

I also upgraded to WordPress 3.1. The automatic updater is great, so far I haven’t had any problems with it. Did you know that WordPress 3.1 is called ‘Reinhardt’ to honour Django Reinhardt – an awesome gypsy jazz guitarist.

Any comments, how do you like it?

Tietokannan siivouspäivä

Sain palveluntarjoajalta viestin:

Tietokantojenne käytettävissä oleva levytilanne on ylittynyt.

Hankkimaanne palveluun kuuluu tietokannoille levytilaa 100 Mt.
Tällä hetkellä tietokantojenne käyttämä levytila on 226.1 Mt.

Tallennus tietokantoihin toimii edelleen, mutta pyydämme teitä
siivoamaan tietokannat sopimuksen mukaiseksi tai olemaan yhteydessä
myyntiimme lisäpalveluiden hankkimiseksi.

Ei minulla ole käsitystä minkä verran blogin tavarat vievät tilaa, mutta silti yllätti että rajat olisivat paukkuneet noin rankasti.

Diagnoosi

Lähdin selvittämään että mikä sitä tilaa siellä oikein vie. Palveluntarjoajan phpmyadmin ei antanut minulle jostain syystä taulukohtaista tietoa tästä, ei oikeudet riittäneet. Löysin aikani etsittyä netistä PHP-skriptin jolla tilankäyttöä voi tutkaista. (Myöhemmin muuten paljastui että myös WP-Optimize -Wordpressliitännäinen osaa tämän saman, suosittelen sitä..)

Syypääksi tilanvientiin paljastui siis wordpressin Counterize II-tilastoija. Se on tallentanut jokaisesta kävijästä selaimen jne joten rivejä on vuosien saatossa kertynyt reilusti toista sataa megaa.

Varmuuskopiot

Otin varmuuskopiot koko paketistani vanhoilla skripteilläni. Onneksi huomasin että jotain on hassusti – tietokantabackuptiedostojen koko oli 0. Palveluntarjoaja vaihtoi äskettäin tietokantakalustoa ja tietokantojen palvelimet muuttuivat enkä ollut muistanut sitä korjata skriptiin.. Pelkkä korjaus ei kuitenkaan riittänyt sillä mysqldump ei saanutkaan yhteyttä uuteen tietokantapalvelimeen. Palveluntarjoajan IRC-tuki oli kuitenkin hereillä ja saivat korjattua heidän päänsä ongelman hetkessä ja homma rullasi taas. Eli varmuuskopiot kuntoon ja sql-dumppien lataus paikalliselle koneelle.

Operaatio

WP-Optimize -pluginilla vanhojen blogirevisioiden sekä spamien poistaminen: 2514 viestirevisiota sekä 6539 spam-kommenttia
Tilaneen tarkastus – muutokset minimaalisia. Ei riitä.
Counterizen tietokannan tyhjennys – uu, pelottavaa!
Counterize -pluginin poistaminen – google hoitakoon hommansa..
Tilanteen tarkastus – tilaa vapautui indeksit mukaanlukien noin 170 megaa.
Tietokannan optimointi WP-Optimizen avulla
Tilanteen tarkastus – tilaa vapautui vielä noin 23 megaa.

Tulokset

Optimointien ja siivouksen jälkeen tilaa kuluu, indeksit mukaanluettuna, vain noin 36MB, pois lähti noin 200MB.

Mikstuura sosiaalista mediaa, osa 2: Blogit

Julkaisin tämän blogin ensimmäisen jutun kesällä 2008. En ole ihan varma mistä inspiraatio tuli, kait oma osuutensa oli sillä, että päädyin Ubuntu Memberiksi, jolla on oikeus julkaista kirjoituksaan Planet Ubuntu -sivulla. Blogi toimi alkuun ehkä ensisijaisesti kanavana saada ajatuksia laajemmin Ubuntu-yhteisön luettavaksi.

Ennen tämän blogin pystyttämistä hain mahdollisuuksia pystyttää jonkinlaista valokuvablogia, jota kautta saisin valokuviani paremmin näkyville. Ensisijaisesti yritin saada siitä itselleni motivaatiota tehdä kuvillani jotain, levyllä kun vain makoilevat. En kuitenkaan mitään täydellistä ratkaisua löytänyt ja päädyin ‘helppoon’ WordPressiin. Joten täällä sitä nyt ollaan :)

Blogi toimii kohdallani myös eräänlaisena ajatusmyllynä. Se on keino koota omia ajatuksiaan kokonaisuuksiksi ja laittaa ne muiden arvioitavaksi. Jokainen kommentti jonka näihin postauksiin saa, innostavat jatkamaan kirjoittelua. Kommentit ovat keskustelua kirjoittajan ja lukijan välillä. Saa siis kommentoida!

Aiheet täällä blogissa vaihtelevat ihan laidasta laitaan, kirkkojutuista Facebookiin, valokuvista erilaisiin Linux-juttuihin. Osittain se on ehkä ongelma, tietynlainen keskittyminen yhden aiheen ympärille voisi olla ihan hyvä, perustaa sitten vaikka eri blogeja käsittelemään eri aiheita. Eipä ole vielä tullut siihen intoa.

Tämä ei kuitenkaan ole ainoa blogi johon kirjoittelen: olen mukana kirjoittelemassa Helsingin Yliopiston Fysiikan laitoksen hallinnon opiskelijaedustajien blogissa ‘Fysiikan laitoksella tapahtuu‘, aikaisemmin olin aktiivinen myös Ubuntu Suomen blogissa.

Kerran viikossa Lifestream -lisäosa koostaa identi.ca ja twitter -mikroblogautukseni sekä Google Readerin kautta jakamani uutiset yhdeksi julkaistavaksi viestiksi, esim. Weekly Digest for February 7th.

Jaa mikäkö on sitten järkevä tapa lukea blogia, 20 ystävällä jos on blogi niin miten sitä jaksaa ravata joka sivulla katsomassa olisiko jotain uutta luettavaa tarjolla? Siihen palaamme juttusarjan seuraavassa osassa :)

Heitäppä oman blogisi osoite kommentteihin niin saattaapi joku uusi lukija sinne tulla. Minä ainakin lupaan käydä vilkaisemassa.

Small changes in the blog

The ‘Daily digest’ is a stupid idea. It’s OK to have it here, but as you see, not being too active to post stories here lets the Lifefeed Daily Digests fill the front page. Therefore I changed it to publish the Weekly Digests. HA!

And I also enabled ‘Random posts’ widget on the sidebar, see http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/advanced-random-posts/

And as a sidenote, I had a look at Drupal. Trying to build a site/blog with multilanguage content, file management, ability to post photos and newsletter support was a bit too much for WordPress – I guess the biggest issue was the bad multilanguage support. I think it definitely should be in the core – and in Drupal it is.

So let’s see, some issues still around with Drupal installation I should try to solve.

Finally upgraded WordPress

Finally I got to the point to upgrade my WordPress installation. I’ve ignored it for too long believing things would break but no, it wasn’t that bad. I also upgraded the Tarski theme to the latest version as well as around 10 plugins. It all seems to work now – maybe even a bit better than before the upgrade. I also changed some widgets on the side & bottom, hoping to keep people longer on the site :) I also changed the top banner photo – this one I’ve taken in 2006 in Tampere, Finland – with polarizer.

New plugins installed

I installed wp-openid plugin to enable readers to post comments using openID, as well as subscribe to comments to give the readers e-mail notification if someone else comments the same post.

More plugins wanted

I’d really like to see a RSS plugin that lets the readers choose what categories he wants to order. At the moment you can pick single categories with addresses like http://www.kurppa.fi/blog/category/categoryname/feed but that’s not handy and the RSS icons for those are missing as well.. I’m not that much into WordPress yet that I’d know how to add them manually..

And another plugin I’d like to have is something to show all tags I’ve been using while posting.. Now I have to go to front page to see the previous tags..

Testing Lightbox plugin

So I also installed the lightbox 2 plugin to show photos nice and now it’s the time to test it: Click here to see a screenshot of my desktop.

Hmm.. doesn’t work. It’s supposed to do something like what happens here when you click on the images..

edit: after this I also installed Simpletags and moved the blogto a new address, to risto.kurppa.fi/blog (from www.kurppa.fi/blog)

edit: It’s some kind of a bug in lightbox that if you have a text link to an image on the page, the effects don’t work.. reported..

WordPress:

I’ve been using Joomla earlier but it’s a pain. I think that these blog and CMS tools should be able to do autoupdate or something similar.. I’m running X old versions of Joomla that should be updated but it’s not a nice thing to do (especially if you run some four years old alpha version that doesn’t upgrade..). But anyway, now it’s my turn to try WordPress.

I’d like to have some good photo viewer, my plan is to post photos here as well at some stage. No, not in the planet, but in my blog.

Tag cloud, I think that’s what I already have. Is there an extended version that would analyze the words used like Wordle does?

How do I add a OpenID comments? (hmm.. that’d be some plugin, I guess.. have to check..)

Is there a way to autopost things not using the WP gui? I’d like to set a script that would autorelease content for example once in a month or so. Is there any other ways to do this but add the content directly in the database?

Anything else you recommend?

And if you know how to get rid of the bar in the top with the ‘Subscribe to feed’ and ‘Home’ things, let me know.. I’m using the ‘Tarski’ theme.
