Adolf Ehrnrooth oli Simo Rantalaisen haastateltavana (?) Hyvät Pahat ja Rumat -ohjelmassa vuonna 1994. Painavaa sanaa näin itsenäisyyspäiväksi.

“Sopimus – olkoon se hyökkäämättömyys, ikuinen, pyhä tai mitä historiasta te löydätte, se palvelee niin kauan, kun se palvelee vahvemman sopimuspuolen etua.”

Lisää sellaista kaipaa Suomen kansa. Viimeinen suurempi puheenvuoro oli Rauman yläasteella joka kantaa Viipurin tyttölyseon perinteitä. Siellä oli 600 nuorta 14-17. Minä luulen että siinä iässä ei paljon valehdella. Usein valehdellaan silloin kun pyritään korkeisiin paikkoihin. Mutta ei siinä iässä valehdella. Ne sanoo: Onpa hyvä että kerrotaan meille, mitä todella on tapahtunut tässä maassa sillä historian oppitunnilla ei aina ole kerrottu sitä”

Rick Warren – he wrote a book, became popular and extremely rich, only to give 90% of the money away. Walk the talk!!

And I guess that’s the main reason I came up here today, to all of you very bright people at TED, is to say, “What’s in your hand?” What do you have that you’ve been given? Talent, background, education, freedom, networks, opportunities, wealth, ideas, creativity. What are you doing with what you’ve been given? That, to me, is the primary question about life. That, to me, is what being purpose-driven is all about. In the book I talk about how you’re wired to do certain things, you’re shaped. This little cross takes spiritual gifts, heart, ability, personality and experiences. These things shape you. And if you want to know what you ought to be doing with your life, you need to look at your shape. What am I wired to do?

TED is an nonprofit organization devoted to ‘Ideas worth spreading’. They arrange conferences and invite inspiring speakers with great ideas – to make our life better. They also record the talks and allow people watch & download the talks freely on their website.

I’ve known about TED for years but only some days ago I decided to watch my first TED talk (downloaded to my N900 phone to watch during the bus trip to work). Since I’ve watched around 10 talks and they’ve all been great trips to new topics and ideas!

Start with this one, Hans Rosling. Great topic, awesome visualization and he’s a fun guy to watch and listen! On the site you can download the video and also read the transcript.

Economic growth to me, as a public-health professor, is the most important thing for development, because it explains 80 percent of survival. Governance. To have a government that functions — that’s what brought California out of the misery of 1850. It was the government which made law function finally. Education, human resources are important. Health is also important, but not that much as a mean. Environment is important. Human rights is also important, but it just gets one cross.

Now what about goals? Where are we going toward? We are not interested in money. Money is not a goal. It’s the best mean, but I give it zero as a goal. Governance, well it’s fun to vote in a little thing, but it’s not a goal. And going to school, that’s not a goal, it’s a mean. Health I give two points. I mean it’s nice to be healthy — at my age especially — you can stand here, you’re healthy. And that’s good, it gets two plusses. Environment is very, very crucial. There’s nothing for the grandkid if you don’t save up. But where are the important goals? Of course, it’s human rights. Human rights is the goal, but it’s not that strong of a mean for achieving development. And culture. Culture is the most important thing, I would say, because that’s what brings joy to life. That’s the value of living.

24hour timelapse with webcam

I have a Logitech HD Webcam C270 at work. It has 1280×720 resolution, works out-of-the box in *buntu Linux. Nice. As I’ve recently found timelapse shooting, I wanted to try how it works with webcam where the battery power will not be the issue. I decided to run about 24 hour timelapse session that became 26 hours.

Shooting

gphoto2 I’ve been using to control external cameras over USB doesn’t work with webcam so I had to find something else and found streamer (that’s the name of the command and the name of the package in Ubuntu repositories)

streamer -o 0000.jpeg -s 1280x720 -j 100 -t 20:00:00 -r 0.1

takes 1280×720 resolution images with jpeg quality 100, interval 0.1 images/second (right, this sucks, I’d like having the option to use fps instead of fsp) until 20:00, and names the images as xxxx.jpg where xxxx is the running number of the image.

streamer -o 0000.jpeg -s 1280x720 -j 100 -t 2900 -r 0.05

Does the same except doesn’t care about the clock but takes 2900 shots.

Cleaning

I shot around 2300 images with about 33s interval. From these I removed about 1000 images of boring nothing-but-black night shots – just to make it more interesting to watch.

Parsing

mencoder -nosound mf://*.jpeg -mf w=1280:h=720:type=jpeg:fps=40 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=2160000:v4mv -o movie.avi && vlc movie.avi

1230 images with 40fps results a 45s movie.

Pros / Cons

Webcam’s great as you don’t run into problems with power. But that’s about all.
The image quality isn’t very great compared to 3000×2000 px SLR. The automatic color/exposure/contrast/… adjustment is bad and doesn’t allow one to see properly the change of lightning conditions. On the other hand if you want to be sure to see all details what happens somewhere this will do it but so will a ‘proper camera’ in automatic mode.

So, if you want..
Long shooting duration: Webcam or normal camera with AC power
Good quality shots or manual settings: normal camera (with AC power)

Result

Not really that interesting, just another demo of what can be done easily with Linux + webcam.

We cleaned the roof of the garage at my parents’ place. After we had cleaned all the soft snow – about 20cm from top, I decided to set up my camera to take time lapse shots to show the cleaning of the remaining 20cm of hard snow. Snow spades and snow plough and huge amounts of snow.

A new time lapse movie every day! Not quite, but – every now and then :)

Time lapse setup

So this is my second try on frost flowers. A bit changed setup but mostly the same config as the previous time when shooting frost flowers.

Notes

Nikon D70 on manual mode (1/640s, F8.0)
Nikon 1.8/50mm lens
~2 minute interval
Two EN-EL3 batteries (from 2005 and 2006..). I definitely need to replace at least the 2005 one, it’s works for about 10 shots..
4G CF card (irrelevant as you can remove the images from there between each shot)
JPG file format (3008x2000px)
I ran the script to take the pictures in my Dropbox folder – and was able to see the results immediately on my Desktop. Also make test runs of the movie generation while most of the shots were still untaken.
As suggested, I pointed a desktop light to the window to hopefully highlight better the details of the flowers. This really helps only when it’s dark – the sun is a too bright backlight.
The frost flowers melt fast – in about 6 minutes this time.

Being still sick & stuck inside, I took the effort to find our Nikon L10 (=cheap and no-so-good pocket camera), hook it to EeePC and make a new series of time lapse photos. This time the delay was around 2 minutes between each shot.

Notes

Try to figure out a way to feed in external power to the camera. 2xNiMH AA’s did a great job, but the time’s still limited by the battery power
Had to plug in a USB flash to EeePC to have the capacity to download photos and see the results while taking the pictures. Worked quite OK.
Need to figure out a way to avoid the reflections from the window – stick the camera out of the window? Yes, but then I definitely need the external power source..
In L10 I couldn’t disable auto focus – and you see it, some of the shots have been focused on the glass showing – the camera itself. Disable auto focus, if possible.
