Notes

• The ‘Continue’ button in the ‘Your mission’ screen doesn’t give any feedback when pressed, just wait for the game to load..
• Having the ‘heat meter’ on top of the screen would be easier: now it’s hidden behind fingers
• Maybe the profile could be shown on the rotating piece of wood instead of showing it separately on the top of the screen.
• Moving the camera is hard.

As you see, connecting it to Linux over USB shows it as Prolific PL2303 Serial Port USB adapter and it appeared as /dev/ttyUSB1

To make Wine see the USB serial port, run ln -s /dev/ttyUSB1 ~/.wine/dosdevices/com1

I was able to install the program smoothly. It runs but the built-in Google Maps view doesn’t work. However I’m able to download the track from the device and save it in .track format. Now when I open this .track format with the app, it gives me the option to store KML and GPX.

However saving in GPX (and KML?) fails and the result is a broken GPX as the program, for some reason, writes coordinates in

        <trkpt lat="60,921448" lon="27,548304">

instead of

        <trkpt lat="60.921448" lon="27.548304">

so search and replace all commas (,) to periods (.) and the tracks start to behave.

A nice device with a decent battery duration, about 10 hours or so on two AAA’s it needs. GPS track isn’t that great: most of the time it’s missing the elevation information and then every now and then it takes me to over 20 kilometers. However it gives easily a nice overview of the route.

Olen lähdössä fillariretkelle ja halusin piirrellä ja suunnitella reittiä etukäteen. Tarvitsin karttapalvelut jotka osaavat piirrellä reitit kevyen liikenteen reittejä pitkin. Pääkaupunkiseudulla selkeä voittaja on Kevyen liikenteen reittiopas josta saa suoraan ladattua GPX-muodossa reitin GPS-tiedot, jopa korkeustiedot ovat mukana. Pääkaupunkiseudun ulkopuolella vaihtoehtoja on huonosti ja paras tulos saatiin kuitenkin Google Mapsilla. Suurin osa reitistä kulkee kuitenkin teiden reunaa pitkin, osasi Google löytää kohtuulliset reitit. Moottoritieltä piti reitti raahata käsin pois (älä käytä ‘vältä moottoriteitä’ -nappulaa, se estää reitin tallentamisen!). Tämän jälkeen reittilistauksen voi tallentaa omiin karttoihin ja jotenkin sieltä sitten tallennettua KML-muodossa tiedostoksi.

Nyt otetaan käyttöön Gpsbabel – GPS-reittien Victorinox!

2. Lisään reittipisteiksi (Waypoint) suunnitellut taukopaikat
3. Exporttaan reitin GPX-tiedostoksi joka siis sisältää kummallekin päivälle oman trackinsa ja lisäksi reittipisteinä taukopaikat.

Menu in portrait mode

Seamless Software Update (SSU), is the term Nokia used to brand the over-the-air updates of Maemo. Community Seamless Software Update (CSSU) is being developed by the Maemo community, for the Maemo community. It aims to deliver fixes which can’t be delivered easily through Extras, such as core Maemo5 packages. It won’t, however, bundle software which can be installed through the Extras repositories. Taken from wiki.maemo.org

The community saw unfixed bugs and unaddressed issues in the official Maemo5 PR-updates (latest being PR1.3 from October 25, 2010 – the very same day I got my N900 :) and there were (and still isn’t) no promises or even indicators from Nokia that they’d release upgrades to Maemo5 so the community started the work to release community upgrades and fixes on the Maemo core calling it Community Seamless Software Update.

I decided to give it a run. I know it’s not stable (BE WARNED, it’s testing, not stable!) but.. as usual, I enjoy living on the edge and had to try it out.

Features

List of added features and fixed bugs is long, see for yourself. Many fixes a standard user doesn’t notice at all, but also some quite visible changes, like lots of work put into making more apps work in the portrait mode, faster scrolling, faster and c00ler rotating of the screen. Or how about 9 desktops instead of the default 4? Menu in portrait mode? And many more. For complete list, see the Changelog

Installation is fairly straight forward but requires many clicks. First take your N900 browser (microB, not Fennec as Fennec doesn’t talk to the software installer..) to http://wiki.maemo.org/Community_SSU and click the ‘install’ button.

At the moment there’s only ‘testing’ version available so don’t expect it to be safe to try! You might end up losing your data on your N900.

(Rant time..) The Software installer (H-A-M, they call it) is soooooooooo slow. I have no idea what does it do, why do I have to wait for soooo long for it to understand that I need to add a line or two in a file to add the CSSU repository and then run apt-get update to update the package lists and in the end just install the app. I hate it and warmly recommend Fapman for all installation needs except the Ovi (or CSSU!?) ones..

Anyway, the software installer asks for you to confirm the actions. Yes, yes, OK, do it and so on. It takes some minutes and then hopefully let’s you know of successful installation.

After this you need to go to your apps list and find ‘Community SSU’ app and start that. It seems to runs some scripts unpacking something, checking for packages in the repositories and then installing more from there. And then it starts the software installer making you wait again. It suggests upgrading of a 2.3Mb ‘Maemo 5 Community SSU’ package, version 20.2010.36-2maemo12.5 in my case. That’s quick.

Then it gives a warning that all apps will be closed and then phone will be restarted and that making backups is recommended. It also shows me the button to make the backups. I thought I’d dare to install CSSU without backups but now that it’s made so easy for me.. let’s do it. Just to be sure.. But limiting only to ‘Communication and calendar’ ignoring settings and app list etc.

Next message I got told me to connect the charger. And I did.

Then it started to work. The screen went black, I tried to activate it by opening the keyboard, clicking on the screen, using the suspend button but not much happened (besides the keyboard lights). I had it on for an hour or two. Then I started to ask around at #maemo-ssu for tips and got pointed out that having charger connected prevents the normal reboot process from happening. So I had to shut down the phone manually (power button menu still worked!). And restart. And it works, I didn’t loose my data and I have CSSU installed! Wrote a note about this to installation FAQ.

To finish, I installed CSSU Features, an app to control the settings CSSU adds to Maemo.

• Much more responsive UI! Smooooth!
• Portrait mode menu is great!
• Blurless desaturation requires a reboot
• Bigger task switcher also requires a reboot. Like this. 2 columns at the moment.
• TIP1 from BCMM@#maemo-ssu: Pressing ctrl+shift+blue+l forces the current view to portrait mode. I used this to take portrait screenshots with ctrl+shift+P (that saves them to /home/user/MyDocs/.images/Screenshots/ ) However, this doesn’t reorganize the menu so all icons will not be shown.

Blurless saturation: the background is sharp

I do recommend CSSU for N900 users (who know the risks of using unstable software :). It gives a great extra boost to the user experience. Scrolling menus is now much smoother than before and the portrait mode works much better than before. Can’t wait to see what improvements are coming in the future releases..

EDIT: By accident I found out that pressing a key from keyboard in application menu starts an app. I then went and asked about what’s the logic, and was pointed to this: modified-hildon-desktop that’s installed with CSSU. Great keyboard shortcuts and settings listed there. Summary of the most useful shortcuts:

• Left and right arrows change desktops in the home screen
• Icons in the launcher and task navigator can be selected by pressing corresponding keys. In the task navigator, if the letter is pressed with shift or FN, the corresponding task is closed, instead of switched to.
  Examples of how the key work:
  • q selects leftmost icon in top row.
  • w selects second icon from left in top row.
  • t selects fifth icon from left in top row.
  • s selects second from left icon in second row.
  • z selects leftmost icon in third row.
  • v selects fourth icon from left in the third row.

Some keyboard shortcuts that I think are still missing – this was already discussed on #maemo, let’s see if something happens..

• Backspace in task switcher could take one to desktop (as backspace in app list takes one to task switcher)
• ctrl+backspace (or enter?) in task switcher could take one to app list (as ctrl+backspace takes one from desktop to task switcher)

I also noticed that I can’t take a photo while speaking on the phone for some reason.

Yleistä

Koska suurin osa testatuista ohjelmista (yhtä lukuunottamatta) oli suunniteltu Windowsille, tarvittiin käyttöön Wine - alusta joka pystyy pyörittämään Linuxin, tässä tapauksessa Kubuntun päällä Windows-ohjelmia. Sen saa asennettua pakettivarastosta, paketin nimi on yksinkertaisesti wine. Testi suoritettiin Kubuntu 10.10:lla ja wine-1.1.32-260-gf222a16:lla.

Kaikki ohjelmat toimivat periaatteella valitse tuote (=kirjan tyyppi), valitse kuvat, lado ne itse sivuille tai anna automatiikan hoitaa se. Tämän jälkeen voi vielä säätää asetteluja, taustakuvia, kuvatekstejä jnejne. Jotkin ohjelmista tarjoavat myös kalenterien, canvas-taulujen, mukien jne tilaamista. Koska testi keskittyi ainoastaan ohjelmiin tai oikeastaan niiden Linux-yhteensopivuuteen, ei lopputulosten kuvanlaadusta ole tietoa tahi takeita.

Ifolor

Ifolor tarjoaa peräti avainlippu-kotimaista suomalais-sveitsiläistä valokuvatuotantoa. Ohjelma vaatii Microsoftin .NET -ympäristön asentamisen. Tämän asentaminen (ladattu Microsoftin .NET 3.0 -sivulta) kaatuu kuitenkin virheeseen. Ifolorin ohjelman asentaminen onnistuu sukkelaan mutta ohjelman käynnistys ei onnistu, luultavasti .NET:n puuttumisen takia. Versionumero tuntematon.

Yhteenveto: Ei onnistu.

Rajala

Asentaminen: Mene Rajalan valokuvakirjasivulle ja lataa sieltä ohjelman Windows-versio.  Klikkaa lataamaasi .exe -tiedostoa niin wine käynnistää asennusohjelman. Klikkaile se läpi ja käynnistä valikoista wine-kohdasta Rajala Pro Shop -sovellus. Minulla asentui versio 2.5.4 (2.7.2010)

• Ohjelma käynnistyy sukkelaan mutta käyttö on jotenkin tahmeaa
• Ohjelman ulkoasu on suhteellisne kuiva harmaa muutamaa vihertävää nappulaa lukuunottamatta
• Ikkuna käyttäytyy välillä kenkusti eikä pääikkunan sisältö skaalaudu juuri mitenkään ikkunan koon muuttuessa. Itseasiassa toisella käynnistyskerralla koko homma heitti volttia eikä pääikkunasta näkynyt kuin osa ja ohjelma piti käynnistää uudestaan. Niillä kerroilla kun homma toimii, toimii se hyvin.
• Kuvien lisääminen on hieman hankalaa. Automaattinen lisääminen saa homman kuitenkin toimimaan sukkelammin
• Kuvien näyttämisessä on jotain ongelmaa, luultavasti johtuen siitä että ajan windows-ohjelmaa winen päällä: jokaisen kuvan peittää valkoinen ristikko joka on kuitenkin vaihtelevan kokoinen eli en usko että kyseessä on mikään feature
• Liian pienten kuvien päällä näkyy punainen varoitusmerkki kertomassa siitä, että tulostusvaiheessa kuvasta luultavasti tulee huonolaatuinen
• Kuvaluettelossa kuvien päälle ilmeistyy numero, joka kertoo kuinka monta kertaa ko. kuvaa on albumissa käytetty.
• Kuvia pystyy pyörittelemään, lisäämään vinjetin, kehyksiä, varjoja, kuvatekstejä jne. Tämä kaikki tuntuu kuitenkin olevan kovin manuaalista eli kovan työn takana tehdä esim. tyylikäs 50-sivuinen kirja – tosin ilmeisesti lopputulos on juuri sitä mitä haluaa.
• Kirjasta voi tulostaa vedosversion: kustakin sivusta luodaa .jpg tai .tiff -kuva. Aika hyvä ominaisuus – paitsi että kukin sivu peitetään ‘Proof’ -leimoilla kertomaan siitä että kyseessä on vedos. Ja näihinkin kuviin jää nuo valkoiset ristit kunkin kuvan päälle.
• Itseasiassa vaikuttaisi siltä että tuo valkoinen ruksi tekee Rajalan ohjelmasta käyttökelvottoman. Pitäisi yhteistyössä Rajalan kanssa selvittää tuleeko tällainen ruksi myös lopulliseen printtiin..

Yhteenveto: Ohjelmana OK, työläältä vaikuttava, ei mitenkään loistava. Minkäänlaista kirjaa ei tällä Linux-käyttäjä ilmeisesti kuitenkaan voi tehdä.

Gigantti

Gigantin ohjelmaa vilkaisin jo alkuvuodesta. Päivitetyt asennusohjeet löytyy täältä. Asentamani versio oli 04.05.04 (10.06.2009)

• Pyörähtää nätisti käyntiin
• Suomennos on jäänyt hieman kesken (‘Ihr CEWE ALBUMI-avustaja)
• Gigantin homma vaan toimii. Onhan se sentään tehty QT:lla joka tarjoaa toimivan ja helpon alustariippumattomuuden.
• Ohjelman ulkoasu on miellyttävän värikäs.
• Tallennus PDF-formaattiin olisi kova ominaisuus
• Ohjelmassa on jännä ominaisuus: kirjaan voi hakea kuvia ja tekstiä netistä locr tai wikipedia geonames -palveluista!
• Ohjelman mukana tulee laaja ja toimiva ohjepaketti

Yhteenveto: Rokkaa ja toimii. Suositellaan!

Vaikka ohjelma oli testin vanhin, kesällä 2009 tehty, on se silti toimivin ja monipuolisin. QT on ollut rohkea ja onnistunut valinta ohjelman toteutusalustaksi. Hyvä Gigantti!!

Fotoyks

Windows-ohjelman saa ladattua fotoyks.fi -sivustolta. Lataamisen jälkeen klikkaa publisher_setup.exe-tiedosto auki jonka jälkeen wine käynnistää asennusohjelman. Asentamani versio oli 3.0.8

• Asennusohjelman läpimeno onnistui vasta toisella yrityksellä. Ensimmäisellä kerralla se jotenkin jumiutui, katosi ja mitään ei tapahtunut. Toisella kerralla asennus kuitenkin onnistui.
• Kirjakokovaihtoehtoja on vain kaksi: A4 ja 30×30, aukolla (kannessa?) tahi ilman.
• Yrittäessäni automaattista kuvien latomista sivuille, sain eteeni vain Windowsin virheilmoituksen, access violation tms. Ei siis onnistunut.
• Kuvien latominen valmiiden kehysten sisään onnistuu helposti ja albumissa jo käytetyt kuva merkitään luettelossa jotta samaa kuvaa ei tule laitettua useampaan kertaan
• Ohjelma osaa kuvan perusmuokkaukset, lähinnä kaikenlaisia automaattisia punasilmäisyyden poistoja ja sensellaisia. Kuitenkin myös manuaaliset säädöt löytyy.
• Pitkä lista kaikenlaisia kuvaefektejä tarjolla
• Fotoyks -ohjelma tarjoaa materiaalin noutamista verkosta: Googlen karttoja, Picasan, Googlen tai stock.xchangen kuva-arkistoista kuvia
• Kun yritin muokata sivun taustaa, kaatui ohjelma yllättäen. Seuraavalla kerralla tämä kuitenkin onnistui paremmin ja sain sivun taustakuvaksi haluamani valokuvan.

Yhteenveto: Suhteellisen toimiva ohjelma, eiköhän tällä saa koottua kirjan myös Linuxilla.

Eirikuva

Lataa Windows-asennusohjelma Eirikuvan kuvakirjaohjelma -sivulta. MyPhotoCreationLInstaller.exe -ohjelman käynnistäminen Winellä kertoo alkuun että minulta puuttuu Java Runtime Environment ja ehdottaa sen lataamista. MIeleen tulee että jos ohjelma vaatii Java-ympäristön, on se luultavasti tehty Javalla.. ja jos sitä Javaversiota tarjottaisiin sellaisenaan ilman Windows-paketointia, voisi sitä ajaa suoraan Linuxilla ilman Wineä. Yllättävää oli kuitenkin että Javan asennus onnistui ongelmitta myös Winen läpi suoritettuna. Kokeiltu versio on 3.6.6

• Erittäin näyttävä ohjelma. Raikas vihreä väritys, kuvien valinta alustavasti toimiva – tosin valitsemalla 118 kuvaa alkoi ohjelma nikoittelemaan ja tapoin sen kokeillakseni hieman pienemmällä määrällä.
• Kuvien tuominen albumiksi kestää piiitkään jopa 23 kuvalla. Itseasiassa niin pitkään ettei se onnistu lainkaan. Muuten erittäin lupaava ohjelma motivoi kuitenkin yrittämään vielä kerran..
• Valitsin eri kirjan ja siihen 22 kuvaa ja tällä kertaa homma onnistui.
• Ohjelman käyttö tuntuu suht jäykältä jostain syystä. En onnistu muuttamaan sivun asettelua, mitään ei vain tapahdu kun yritän raahata asettelumallia sivun päälle.

Yhteenveto: Erittäin lupaavan oloinen ohjelma jos vain toimisi. Mutta kun ei.

Color-Kolmio / Kuvakirjani

Linkki Windows-ohjelman lataussivulle. Kyseessä jälleen kerran tuttu ohjelma jota tarjoavat niin Tunn1n kuva, Rajala kuin Fotolife. Versionumero 2.5.4 (2.7.2010).

• Samat ruksit kuvien päällä kuin Rajalalla – näyttäisi siis siltä että ohjelma ei ole käyttäkelpoinen Linuxin päällä ajettuna.

Yhteenveto: Ei onnistu.

Tunnin kuva

Windows-kuvakirjaohjelman voi ladata Tunnin kuvan kotisivuilta. Wine asentaa ohjelman version 2.5.3 (1.4.2010) sukkelasti. Käynnistyessään ohjelma ilmoittaa vanhenemispäivämääräksi 31.12.2099. Toivottavasti kerkeää kirjan ennen tätä saattamaan valmiiksi.

• Tunn1n kuva tarjoaa paljon erilaisia kirjavaihtoehtoja!
• Käynnistyessään käy ilmi että ohjelma on itseasiassa sama mitä Rajala käyttää. Versionumero paljastaa että Tunn1n kuvan tarjoama versio on pykälän Rajalan versiota vanhempi.
• Tarkempi ohjelman analyysi löytyy yltä Rajalan ohjelman esittelyn tienoilta
• Pikatesti paljasti ohjelman hyvin pitkälti yhtä toimivaksi kuin Rajalan. Samat ongelmat, samat toimivuudet.

Yhteenveto: Luultavasti tämäkään ei Linux-käyttäjälle kirjan tekemiseksi taivu: jokaiseen kuvaan jää valkoinen ristikko kuvan päälle.

ExtraFilm

Latauslinkki Windows-ohjelmalle. Wine-asennuksen aikana ohjelma antaa jonkun muutaman epämääräisen (‘Virhe myönnön valvonnassa’ jne) virheen mutta jatkaa silti asennusta. Asennuksen lopuksi saadaan vielä joku lisävirhe ja sama toistuu myös ohjelmaa käynnistettäessä. Extrafilm Desginer 3.0.

Yhteenveto: Ei onnistu.

Digiexpress / kuvakirjakauppa

Latauslinkki kuvakirjaohjelmalle. Digiexpress tarjoaa kahta eri ohjelmaa: helppokäyttäinen Xpress ja osaajille tarkoitettu Krafter. Testataan molempia..

Xpress, versio 1.7.0.0

• Ohjelman ‘oikea’ nimi on Pxl Soft:n Fastbind Xpress ja asennustiedoston koko on peräti 220 MB kaikkien muiden yritysten ohjelmien pysyessä alle 100MB:ssa. Ehkäpä nämä tarjoavat kovasti taustakuvia tms?
• Ohjelma ponkaisee suoraan kokoruutuun käyntiin ja ehdottaa jonkinlaista rekisteröintiä alkuun: tietoja käytetään laskutukseen. Tämän voi kuitenkin ohittaa.
• Kuvien valinta kävi sukkelasti, samalla valittiin mikä kuva tulee kanteen.
• Kun tuli kuvien asettelun aika, kaatui ohjelma. Sama uudellakin yrityksellä

Yhteenveto: Ei onnistu, kaatuu. Ehkä joku tietty sivuformaatti tms onnistuu vaan ei oikein vakuuttanut.

Krafter, versio 1.7.0.0

• Hyvin paljon samaa kuin Xpressissä. Sama valmistaja, ei käynnistä suoraan jotain welhoa vaan avaa näkymän jossa.. no, pääsee säätämään kaiken itse.
• Kokonaan englanninkielinen, ‘tehokas’ (=hirveä) ulkoasu.
• Ohjelma antoi kuvien valinnan alkaessa hämmentävän virheen: “No error occured” ja alla oli OK -nappula. Tämän jälkeen ei voinut jatkaa, mitään jatkonappulaa ei esillä olleessa ikkunassa ollut.
• Sama virhe tuli kaikilla kolmella tarjolla olevalla kirjaformaatilla.

Yhteenveto: Ei onnistu.

Aseman Kuvapiste / Kuvatehdas / Fujifilm

Latauslinkki Windows-ohjelmalle. Wine asentaa ohjelman version 2.5.4 sukkelaan ja se käynnistyykin ongelmitta.

• Ensivaikutelma on erittäin lupaava!
• Ohjelma asensi peräti jonkin etätuki-sovelluksen. Mielenkiintoista.
• Avattuani kuvientuontiruudun sain heti eteeni pari herjaa. Valitsin kansion ja virheilmoituksia tuli eteen lisää ja lisää – ilmeisesti omansa jokaista 469 tiedostoa kohden. Ei näin.
• Yritin uudestaan ja sain samat loppumattomat herjat.

Yhteenveto: Katsoa saa vaan ei koskea – muuten lähtee lapasesta. Ei tällä kuvakirjoja Linuxilla tehdä.

Kodak

Suurta ja kansainvälistä mutta suomenkielinen lataussivu kuitenkin vihdoin löytyi. Valikosta valitaan WinXP-versio ja tarjolle tulee Kodak Easysharesta versio 8.2 (8.2.2010). Asennusohjelma kuitenkin tökkää virheeseen myös useammalla yrittämisellä.

Yhteenveto: Ei onnistu.

Fotolife

Linkki asennusohjelmaan, Toiprintin versio 2.5.3 (1.4.2010) Sukkela asennus Winellä. Ensimmäinen käynnistys paljastaa että kyseessä on sama ohjelma mitä Rajala, Tunnin kuva ja Color-Kolmio tarjoavat.

• Kuvatuotteiden tiedot piti keksiä käskeä ohjelma lataamaan, automaattisesti se ei sitä tehnyt. Tämä ei kuitenkaan onnistunut lainkaan eli tarjolla ei loppujenlopuksi ollut mitään kirjavaihtoehtoja kokeiltavaksi. Hienoa.

Yhteenveto: Ei onnistu.

Yhteenveto kaikista ohjelmista

1. Sija: Gigantti – kaikin puolin toimiva ja lupaava ohjelma
2. Sija: Fotoyks – suht OK peli jolla kirjan kyllä luultavasti tekee

Kunniamaininnat:
Rajala / Fotolifen / Tunn1n Kuva / Color-Kolmio – Ei onnistu kirjan teko mutta kannattaa pitää silmällä seuraavia versioita!
Eirikuva – lähes toimiva. Ei tälläkään  kirjan tekeminen onnistu mutta silti jotenkin varsin positiivinen kokemus.

Muut kilpailijat eivät juuri kehuja kerää. Lähetin kuitenkin kaikkiin testiin osallistuneihin yrityksiin (paitsi Kodakille – sivuilta ei löytynyt mielekästä tapaa ottaa yhteyttä kotimaisella kielellä.. Pitäköön tunkkinsa..) viestin jossa kerroin testin tuloksista. Nähtäväksi jää, vastaako joku näistä yrityksistä ja paraneeko Linux-tuki tulevaisuudessa.

Details to improve

• ~short battery life, especially when you can’t leave your new N900 alone for a second but have to play with it. But it’s OK for about a day for me.
• When talking, the charger plug is on top of the phone, pointing up, not down, as ‘normal phones’ have it
• Using the keyboard is hard with charger/usb or headphone connected as the plugs are on the side of the keyboard, where I have my hands
• No DEL or ALT on the keyboard
• In the ‘Desktop view’ or inside ~any running app pressing the top left corner of the touch screen shows you thumbnails of all open apps . Pressing it another time shows all apps. Pressing Sym/Ctrl + Backspace on the keyboard also shows the thumbnails of open apps. Maybe pressing the same buttons again could show me all apps?!
• In popup windows one has to click outside the popup window to close it. There are no buttons to click, you just need to know this.
• Categorizing apps might be a good idea maybe? Catorise fixes this, except that all apps don’t have the categories set up very well.
• The home dir configuration is a bit unclear. Must be because of the ‘used device’ thing so that people won’t mess up their system.

Hilights

• On the day I bought it, Nokia released new firmware. To celebrate my purchase, I guess. Updating was smooth over wlan.
• About 4 days later Nokia released Meego 1.1. I’m very interested in trying it out as soon as I have the time.
• Integrated instant messaging. I’m able to add Facebook chat, Google Talk, Jabber, Sip and Skype account details and get all my friends listed on my contacts. There’s also some automatization to match these accounts to the phone numbers from copied from my SIM, but having phone book names in the KurppaR (for Risto Kurppa) form and IM names showing Risto Kurppa, the automatization really doesn’t work that well.
• Having contact shortcuts on the ‘desktop’ also shows their IM status. Veeery useful!
• Being able to call Skype calls over mobile broadband! I have 384 kbit/s from dna and I’ve successfully used Skype over it to call my family in Finland and abroad. Awesome!
• Web radios and Youtube over 3G – works fine!
• Ripping DVD with Handbrake and watching it from N900. Great!
• Camera – this is the first actual camera I carry always with me. I had Nokia 6170 earlier but the camera really was of no use.
• Integrated social media. It’s c00l to take a photo and send it to Flickr or Facebook within seconds from anywhere!
• Web browser works like a web browser is supposed to work. It supports modern techniques to show Gmail and Facebook without any glitches.
• Calendar and e-mail sync from Google. Seems to work both ways. Priceless!!
• Terminal & root privileges. I’m able to install whatever I want.
• Huge screen. Big enough to watch films. Haven’t tried really yet, need to find a way to decode DVD’s.
• OVI Store. I know it isn’t perfect, but for sure it’s nice to have a place to easily browse through apps to install/buy.

Apps

• catorise – to categorize icons
• jammo – music game for kids
• jenirok – to search for Finnish contacts, also show names for unknown incoming calls
• fapman – fast application manager to replace Nokia’s app manager
• bounce – nice 3d technology demo game
• como llego – public transportation router
• battery-eye – analyze power usage
• mappero – map software
• syngic mobile maps 10 – navigation software. Got this with the phone, preinstalled
• panorama – photo app from Nokia. Nice but unstable
• Katana – bible reader
• SP Brain Evolution – brain trainer
• khweeteur – Twitter client
• gpodder – podcast aggregator

What are your favorite / must apps? Do you know of any better than tese for the same tasks?

Summary

Maemo5 isn’t fully open, there are lots of closed bits that no-one really knows much about. Nokia does the work behind closed doors, release notes can be very subtle: ‘speed improvements’. I hope Meego will improve this a bit as it’s lead by the Linux Foundation. With N900 I’m able to install lots of cool (free/open) stuff, have decent control on the phone, and use great (also closed) services.

Freerunner, welcome N900 to join the team.

This created a need to configure Nokia N900 to connect to Helsinki University wireless network HUPnet and authenticate using OpenVPN to avoid browser authentication. This is how you do it.

Configuring

1. Connect to HUPnet & login with your browser
2. Install openvpn-applet
3. Take your N900 browser to https://ohjelma.it.helsinki.fi/ and login
4. Click the HY-VPN folder
5. Click on Linux folder
6. Click on hy-vpn-config.tgz
7. On the page that opens, click on the hy-vpn-config.tgz link again to start download
8. Save it to Documents folder on your N900
9. Open Xterminal
10. Run cd /home/user/MyDocs/.documents to go to the folder where the downloaded file is
11. Run tar zxf hy-vpn-config.tgz to extract the downloaded package with the config files
12. Click on the top bar and from there, click on OpenVPN
13. Click Manage Connections -> New
14. Click on Configuration file -> Documents -> openvpn.conf (You’ll get an error message of missing liteca.crt, it’s OK)
15. Click on Ca File -> Documents -> liteca.crt
16. Click on Import. Now HUPnet OpenVPN should be configured. Close all windows.

Using

1. Connect to HUPnet WLAN
2. Click on the top bar and from there click on OpenVPN
3. Click on ‘Connect to openvpn’
4. Type in your credentials and click ‘Valmis’, ‘Ready’, ‘OK’ or similar
5. There’s a new icon on top bar showing you’re connected.

Worksforme.

Now it’d be nice to figure out how to not have to type in the credentials..
