As you see, connecting it to Linux over USB shows it as Prolific PL2303 Serial Port USB adapter and it appeared as /dev/ttyUSB1

To make Wine see the USB serial port, run ln -s /dev/ttyUSB1 ~/.wine/dosdevices/com1

I was able to install the program smoothly. It runs but the built-in Google Maps view doesn’t work. However I’m able to download the track from the device and save it in .track format. Now when I open this .track format with the app, it gives me the option to store KML and GPX.

However saving in GPX (and KML?) fails and the result is a broken GPX as the program, for some reason, writes coordinates in

        <trkpt lat="60,921448" lon="27,548304">

instead of

        <trkpt lat="60.921448" lon="27.548304">

so search and replace all commas (,) to periods (.) and the tracks start to behave.

A nice device with a decent battery duration, about 10 hours or so on two AAA’s it needs. GPS track isn’t that great: most of the time it’s missing the elevation information and then every now and then it takes me to over 20 kilometers. However it gives easily a nice overview of the route.

Shooting

gphoto2 I’ve been using to control external cameras over USB doesn’t work with webcam so I had to find something else and found streamer (that’s the name of the command and the name of the package in Ubuntu repositories)

streamer -o 0000.jpeg -s 1280x720 -j 100 -t 20:00:00 -r 0.1

takes 1280×720 resolution images with jpeg quality 100, interval 0.1 images/second (right, this sucks, I’d like having the option to use fps instead of fsp) until 20:00, and names the images as xxxx.jpg where xxxx is the running number of the image.

streamer -o 0000.jpeg -s 1280x720 -j 100 -t 2900 -r 0.05

Does the same except doesn’t care about the clock but takes 2900 shots.

Cleaning

I shot around 2300 images with about 33s interval. From these I removed about 1000 images of boring nothing-but-black night shots – just to make it more interesting to watch.

Parsing

mencoder -nosound mf://*.jpeg -mf w=1280:h=720:type=jpeg:fps=40 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=2160000:v4mv -o movie.avi && vlc movie.avi

1230 images with 40fps results a 45s movie.

Pros / Cons

Webcam’s great as you don’t run into problems with power. But that’s about all.
The image quality isn’t very great compared to 3000×2000 px SLR. The automatic color/exposure/contrast/… adjustment is bad and doesn’t allow one to see properly the change of lightning conditions. On the other hand if you want to be sure to see all details what happens somewhere this will do it but so will a ‘proper camera’ in automatic mode.

So, if you want..
Long shooting duration: Webcam or normal camera with AC power
Good quality shots or manual settings: normal camera (with AC power)

Result

Not really that interesting, just another demo of what can be done easily with Linux + webcam.

Reaktio oli yllättävä: kommentaattoreiksi löytyi kaksi muuta Ubuntua käyttävää naishenkilöä jotka tykkäsivät siitä! Mahtavaa nähdä että Ubuntu leviää tasaisella tahdilla myös tavallisten ihmisten (=ei-nörttimiesten) keskuuteen! Toki he kertoivat että alussa oli Windowsiin tottuneelle ollut hieman opettelua mutta vähitellen käyttöä on oppinut eikö ole koneen kaatuilu ollut ongelmana.

Alkuperäinen kirjoittelija kiinnostui että mikäs tämä Ubuntu on, onko se joku lyhennös undulaatista vai..

Niinpä kirjoittelin lyhyen (?) esittelyn Ubuntusta jonka ajattelin jakaa täälläkin.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu on käyttäjärjestelmä kuten Windows tai maceissa pyörivä OS X. Se siis hoitaa mm. kaiken jutustelun ohjelmien ja laitteiden välillä (siis kaiken mitä tapahtuu siinä välissä kun käsket mokkulaa yhdistämään verkkoon siihen että se sit sinne yhdistää). Noin karkeesti.

Windows on Microsoftin lippulaiva ja se maksaa rahaa. Myös tietokoneissa, joihin ei erikseen osteteta Windowsia, vaan jossa se on asennettu jo ostettaessa, osa hinnasta tulee tästä Windowsin hinnasta. Windows on se perusjuhta joka löytyy kaikkialta. Sen ongelmia on juurikin monille tutuksi tullut epävakaus eli kaatuilu sekä ajan mittaan hidastuminen kun sinne kertyy jotain ‘tauhkaa’. Myös virukset ovat Windowsin riesa.

OS X on Applen tuote ja sekin maksaa rahaa. Sen ‘erikoisuus’ on se, että se pyörii vain Applen omissa tuotteissa, eli niissä mäkkitieskareissa. Apple pyrkii erittäin aggressiivisesti sitomaan käyttäjiä omiin tuotteisiinsa: esimerkiksi uusi iPhone ei lähde henkiin jos käytössä ei ole tieskaria jossa iTunesia ja Apple myös pyrkii juurikin estämään sen, ettei OS X:ää ajettaisi muilla koneilla. Lyhyesti siis tietyissä, suht suurissakin piireissä Applea pidetään epäreiluna pelurina, joka tekee nätin näköisiä tuotteita. OS X on käsittääkseni Windowsia vakaampi eikä viruksista ole riesaa.

Ja sitten on tämä Linux. Jos tarkkoja ollaan, Linux on se, mitä suomalainen Linus Torvalds 90-luvulla kirjoitteli Helsingin Yliopistossa: käyttäjärjestelmän ydin. Sen päälle on rakennettu sitten kokonaisuuksia joita kutsutaan jakeluversioiksi eli distribuutioiksi. Ubuntu on näistä yksi.

Ubuntun starttasi Etelä-Afrikkalainen it-kuplan aikaan rikastunut Mark Shuttleworth. Se iski rahat säätiöön joka tukee Ubuntun kehittämistä. Aktiivisesti mukana on myös Canonical -niminen yritys, jota Shuttleworth pyörittää.

Ubuntu on Etelä-Afrikan bantukielestä peräisin oleva sana ja tarkoittaa juttuja jotka pyörivät yhteisön ja toisten auttamisen ympärillä, kts Nelson Mandelan ja Desmond Tutun määritelmä sanalle Ubuntu.

Ubuntu -Linux -käyttöjärjestelmä pyrkii mahdollistamaan tietokoneen käytön tasapuolisesti ihmisille rahan määrästä (ilmainen, nyt ja aina), kielestä (käännetty kokonaan 29 kielelle, osittain 189 kielelle) tahi osaamisesta (käyttö pyritty tekemään mahdollisimman helpoksi, vaikeinta on juurikin Windows-käyttäjillä jotka ovat tottuneet tiettyihin kaavoihin).

Käytännössä Ubuntu on vakaa (=ei kaadu – erittäin käytetty internetiä pystyssä pitävissä palvelinkoneissa), helppokäyttöinen, nopea (=ei ruuhkaudu windowsin tavoin), turvallinen (=ei viruksia, ei tarvetta erilliselle palomuurille) käyttöjärjestelmä. Ubuntu-filosofia johtaa myös siihen, että käyttäjäyhteisö on erittäin suopea myös aloittelijoille: forumilla oikeasti uskaltaa kysellä tyhmiä – ja saa silti fiksuja vastauksia! VALO

Ai, se piti vielä kertoa että Ubuntu on niin sanottua VALO -ohjelmistoa, eli Vapaa, Avoimen Lähdekoodin Ohjelma.

Vapaus tarkoittaa sitä, että sitä saa levittää rajoituksetta. Kopioida kaverille niin paljon kuin haluaa.
Vapaus tarkoittaa myös sitä, että Ubuntun ohjelmia saa muokata vapaasti omiin tarpeisiinsa sopivasti.

Avoimmuus tarkoittaa sitä, että ohjelmien alkuperäiset koodit tarjotaan niistä kiinnostuneille – tämä on se joka mahdollistaa tuon edellisen vapauskohdan, eli ohjelmien muokkaamisen.

Mikään näistä ei toteudu esim. Microsoftin päätuotteiden kohdalla: Ei Windowsia tai Officea saa kopioida kenellekään, ei niitä saa muokkailla – niitä ei edes pääsisi muokkaamaan koska lähdekoodia ei ole saatavilla.

Menu in portrait mode

Seamless Software Update (SSU), is the term Nokia used to brand the over-the-air updates of Maemo. Community Seamless Software Update (CSSU) is being developed by the Maemo community, for the Maemo community. It aims to deliver fixes which can’t be delivered easily through Extras, such as core Maemo5 packages. It won’t, however, bundle software which can be installed through the Extras repositories. The community saw unfixed bugs and unaddressed issues in the official Maemo5 PR-updates (latest being PR1.3 from October 25, 2010 – the very same day I got my N900 :) and there were (and still isn’t) no promises or even indicators from Nokia that they’d release upgrades to Maemo5 so the community started the work to release community upgrades and fixes on the Maemo core calling it Community Seamless Software Update.

I decided to give it a run. I know it’s not stable (BE WARNED, it’s testing, not stable!) but.. as usual, I enjoy living on the edge and had to try it out.

Features

List of added features and fixed bugs is long, see for yourself. Many fixes a standard user doesn’t notice at all, but also some quite visible changes, like lots of work put into making more apps work in the portrait mode, faster scrolling, faster and c00ler rotating of the screen. Or how about 9 desktops instead of the default 4? Menu in portrait mode? And many more. For complete list, see the Changelog

Installation is fairly straight forward but requires many clicks. First take your N900 browser (microB, not Fennec as Fennec doesn’t talk to the software installer..) to http://wiki.maemo.org/Community_SSU and click the ‘install’ button.

At the moment there’s only ‘testing’ version available so don’t expect it to be safe to try! You might end up losing your data on your N900.

(Rant time..) The Software installer (H-A-M, they call it) is soooooooooo slow. I have no idea what does it do, why do I have to wait for soooo long for it to understand that I need to add a line or two in a file to add the CSSU repository and then run apt-get update to update the package lists and in the end just install the app. I hate it and warmly recommend Fapman for all installation needs except the Ovi (or CSSU!?) ones..

Anyway, the software installer asks for you to confirm the actions. Yes, yes, OK, do it and so on. It takes some minutes and then hopefully let’s you know of successful installation.

After this you need to go to your apps list and find ‘Community SSU’ app and start that. It seems to runs some scripts unpacking something, checking for packages in the repositories and then installing more from there. And then it starts the software installer making you wait again. It suggests upgrading of a 2.3Mb ‘Maemo 5 Community SSU’ package, version 20.2010.36-2maemo12.5 in my case. That’s quick.

Then it gives a warning that all apps will be closed and then phone will be restarted and that making backups is recommended. It also shows me the button to make the backups. I thought I’d dare to install CSSU without backups but now that it’s made so easy for me.. let’s do it. Just to be sure.. But limiting only to ‘Communication and calendar’ ignoring settings and app list etc.

Next message I got told me to connect the charger. And I did.

Then it started to work. The screen went black, I tried to activate it by opening the keyboard, clicking on the screen, using the suspend button but not much happened (besides the keyboard lights). I had it on for an hour or two. Then I started to ask around at #maemo-ssu for tips and got pointed out that having charger connected prevents the normal reboot process from happening. So I had to shut down the phone manually (power button menu still worked!). And restart. And it works, I didn’t loose my data and I have CSSU installed! Wrote a note about this to installation FAQ.

To finish, I installed CSSU Features, an app to control the settings CSSU adds to Maemo.

Experiences

• Much more responsive UI! Smooooth!
• Portrait mode menu is great!
• Blurless desaturation requires a reboot
• Bigger task switcher also requires a reboot. Like this. 2 columns at the moment.
• TIP1 from BCMM@#maemo-ssu: Pressing ctrl+shift+blue+l forces the current view to portrait mode. I used this to take portrait screenshots with ctrl+shift+P (that saves them to /home/user/MyDocs/.images/Screenshots/ ) However, this doesn’t reorganize the menu so all icons will not be shown.
• TIP2 via DocScrutinizer@#maemo-ssu, by shadowjk: there’s a script to check if swap ‘reset’ is needed (run it if your N900 has been on for few days and feels sluggish): http://enivax.net/jk/n900/reswap.sh.txt

Blurless saturation: the background is sharp

I do recommend CSSU for N900 users (who know the risks of using unstable software :). It gives a great extra boost to the user experience. Scrolling menus is now much smoother than before and the portrait mode works much better than before. Can’t wait to see what improvements are coming in the future releases..

EDIT: By accident I found out that pressing a key from keyboard in application menu starts an app. I then went and asked about what’s the logic, and was pointed to this: modified-hildon-desktop that’s installed with CSSU. Great keyboard shortcuts and settings listed there. Summary of the most useful shortcuts:

• Left and right arrows change desktops in the home screen
• Icons in the launcher and task navigator can be selected by pressing corresponding keys. In the task navigator, if the letter is pressed with shift or FN, the corresponding task is closed, instead of switched to.
  Examples of how the key work:
  • q selects leftmost icon in top row.
  • w selects second icon from left in top row.
  • t selects fifth icon from left in top row.
  • s selects second from left icon in second row.
  • z selects leftmost icon in third row.
  • v selects fourth icon from left in the third row.

Some keyboard shortcuts that I think are still missing – this was already discussed on #maemo, let’s see if something happens..

• Backspace in task switcher could take one to desktop (as backspace in app list takes one to task switcher)
• ctrl+backspace (or enter?) in task switcher could take one to app list (as ctrl+backspace takes one from desktop to task switcher)

I also noticed that I can’t take a photo while speaking on the phone for some reason.

I was sick a while ago. The first day I didn’t do much but sleep and read comics. The second day, the most exciting event of the day was to see how the frost flowers in the window melted. In the morning it was about -27C but then during the day the sun heated the window so much that the frost flowers melted away. Seeing new flowers in the window the following morning, I decided to try to make a time lapse video of how they melt.

Code to control the camera

First, I grapped a piece of old camera control code from one of my old posts. gphoto2 is able to control my Nikon D70 DSLR over USB: tell it to take a shot, download the image and so on. So this is the code I ended up with:

This takes a picture, waits for 60 seconds, downloads the previous picture, and starts it all over again. As it does this for 400 times, it should give me almost 7 hours of shooting time.

Notes

• Nikon D70, on manual mode, 1/800s, F7.1, manual focus
• Sigma F2.8 105mm macro lens
• D70 needs to be set  to PTP mode and also had to set the camera to store on the memory card (see gphoto2 –set-config-something..)
• Make sure you have enough space on the card! If this is a problem, you can also remove files from the camera using gphoto2 -D …
• Make sure you start with a full battery. I did. It went empty. Tried to replace it – only to find out that also my backup battery was empty. Fail.
• Don’t move the camera. Don’t touch it!
• During the shooting, I had this one-liner running in the folder where the images were downloaded: while true; do gwenview -s . && sleep 300; pkill gwenview; done to see some of the images on the screen all the time. It’d be nice if gwenview would integrate new files in the slideshow folder to the running slideshow, but as this didn’t work, I needed to kill and restart it every now and then to see the latest results.

Converting JPG files to video

It sure wasn’t easy to figure out a decent way to do this. But this is how I did it:

• Create a 3008x2000px (same as my camera resolution) jpg to use as title of the movie
• Save 4 copies of it (title1.jpg title2.jpg etc..)
• Create 1 second title clip: mencoder -nosound mf://*.jpeg -mf w=1504:h=1000:type=jpg:fps=8 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=2160000:v4mv -o title.avi
• Create the ‘main film’: mencoder -nosound mf://*.JPG -mf w=1504:h=1000:type=jpg:fps=8 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=2160000:v4mv -o movie.avi
• Join these together: avimerge -o final.avi -i title.avi title.avi title.avi movie.avi title.avi title.avi

The bad news is that no FLOSS on WP7 (Market?) – and many (up to 5000?) Meego, Qt and Symbian devels in Finland will loose their jobs. Feeling sorry for you guys. Maybe now it’s time to start a new Nokia?

Ei minulla ole käsitystä minkä verran blogin tavarat vievät tilaa, mutta silti yllätti että rajat olisivat paukkuneet noin rankasti.

Diagnoosi

Lähdin selvittämään että mikä sitä tilaa siellä oikein vie. Palveluntarjoajan phpmyadmin ei antanut minulle jostain syystä taulukohtaista tietoa tästä, ei oikeudet riittäneet. Löysin aikani etsittyä netistä PHP-skriptin jolla tilankäyttöä voi tutkaista. (Myöhemmin muuten paljastui että myös WP-Optimize -Wordpressliitännäinen osaa tämän saman, suosittelen sitä..)

Tässä se mitä skriptin tulostaman sivun lähdekoodi näytti:

Syypääksi tilanvientiin paljastui siis wordpressin Counterize II-tilastoija. Se on tallentanut jokaisesta kävijästä selaimen jne joten rivejä on vuosien saatossa kertynyt reilusti toista sataa megaa.

Varmuuskopiot

Otin varmuuskopiot koko paketistani vanhoilla skripteilläni. Onneksi huomasin että jotain on hassusti – tietokantabackuptiedostojen koko oli 0. Palveluntarjoaja vaihtoi äskettäin tietokantakalustoa ja tietokantojen palvelimet muuttuivat enkä ollut muistanut sitä korjata skriptiin.. Pelkkä korjaus ei kuitenkaan riittänyt sillä mysqldump ei saanutkaan yhteyttä uuteen tietokantapalvelimeen. Palveluntarjoajan IRC-tuki oli kuitenkin hereillä ja saivat korjattua heidän päänsä ongelman hetkessä ja homma rullasi taas. Eli varmuuskopiot kuntoon ja sql-dumppien lataus paikalliselle koneelle.

Operaatio

1. WP-Optimize -pluginilla vanhojen blogirevisioiden sekä spamien poistaminen: 2514 viestirevisiota sekä 6539 spam-kommenttia
2. Tilaneen tarkastus – muutokset minimaalisia. Ei riitä.
3. Counterizen tietokannan tyhjennys – uu, pelottavaa!
4. Counterize -pluginin poistaminen – google hoitakoon hommansa..
5. Tilanteen tarkastus – tilaa vapautui indeksit mukaanlukien noin 170 megaa.
6. Tietokannan optimointi WP-Optimizen avulla
7. Tilanteen tarkastus – tilaa vapautui vielä noin 23 megaa.

Tulokset

Optimointien ja siivouksen jälkeen tilaa kuluu, indeksit mukaanluettuna, vain noin 36MB, pois lähti noin 200MB.

Tässä diff muutoksista. Muuttuneet rivit merkitty x:llä.

Suhteellisen tuloksekas siivous. Taas riittää 100 megaa pitkäksi aikaa.

5. Tee luovutusilmoitus
6. Kirjaudu vastaanottajan tiedoilla domain.ficora.fi -sivustolle
7. Tee siirtopyyntö osoitteesta. Tähän tarvitaan luovutusilmoitusta tehdessä annettu turvakoodi
8. Maksa uusi domain verkkopankkitunnuksilla
9. Valmis. Muutokset ovat voimassa ja näkyvissä heti

Muutos tulee näkyviin välittömästi. Tässä whois -tiedot ennen siirtopyyntöä

Omistajuuden vaihto ei liene niin yleistä kuin tietojen päivitys: yleisin operaatio lienee nimipalvelintietojen päivitys jossa kerrotaan mille palvelimelle kyseisen domainin tulisi ohjautua. Tämä muutos tarvitsee tehdä palveluntarjoajaa vaihtaessa – ja yleensä palveluntarjoajat tekevätkin muutokset puolestasi, pyynnöstä.

Encouraged by the results from yesterday, we continued testing our Reprap (clone) today. It’s not a real Reprap as.. we.. we only use the extruder from Reprap, everything else was already existing for other purposes and suited 3D printing (like the translation stage, control software).

I installed Repsnapper on the control  computer running Ubuntu 10.04.1 to create Gcode from the STL files you can download from example from Thingiverse. Here are some of the models we tried to print:

• Parametrized Lego Bricks
• Snowflake Tree Ornament
• Snap-together Polygon Vertices
• Invaders! (v2)

Parameters

We tried various Repsnapper settings to improve the print quality. We learned that there is a nice list of parameters to tune for the best printing result: extruder material width, extrusion speed, extruder nozzle temperature, layer thickness, XY speed, maybe also temperature of the environment, filament material and so on. We mostly played with extrusion speed and layer thickness and also experimented with infill settings. Infill is the part where space between the walls is printed full – usually it’s some kind of grid, not 100% full of ABS.

We also tried printing on a heated bed (100C, covered with Kapton tape). Not sure what was the effect of the heating but maybe it improved the quality on the first two or three layers by letting the melted plastic cool down a little bit slower.

Success

Generally it was a success. We enjoyed a lot seeing the printer make something with a clear shape. We saw the work flow from a thingiverse STL file to gcode to printed object happen.

Problems

The Gcode Repsnapper generates isn’t that perfect after all. First, we have an A axis controlling the extruder and Repsnapper gives us E, and it’s hard-coded there in many places. An EMC2 filter would help here. The code it generates doesn’t seem to be very optimized. It leaves small bits unfinished here and there and then comes and fixes them later. Also we don’t know if it’s normal to have the sides of a printed block every other layer straight line and every other in a waveform caused by the infill. Of course it would look nice if the sides were made of straight lines next to each other, nothing more. So we’ll try some other G-code generators soon.

Antiooze is the feature, where the extruder is moved back a little bit so that no more filament is extruded, when the head moves from an end position to the next start position. As we didn’t have it working very well, there are many extra, unwanted printed lines between the walls. Moving back does ease the pressure in the nozzle but it’s way too slow to actually stop the filament from coming out of the nozzle. So tried it but it really wasn’t worth using, making printing very slow.

The steppers of the translation stage seems to be missing some steps as most of our prints lean a little bit to -X dir. Printing 4 mm high object already has 1-2mm of offset on a straight wall. Anders also tried slower acceleration but it didn’t help.
