But it’s useless to ever think like that – you’re surprised with the variety of apps that are available and developed for Linux.
I bumped to this blog post on Planet KDE: Sports Activity Tracking App: The Baby Needs a Name.

And it looks awesome.

Reading the comments I found some other apps that do more or less the same, and Google gave me even more. So here’s just a quick list of GPS / HRM apps you might want to have a look if they’d be useful for you:

It’s a pain to have hundreds of GPX files in folders, some kind of tool to search would be neat. Maybe KPhotoalbum will some day be extended to manage any data, not just photos and videos :)A great place to discuss free GPS software is the FOSS-GPS mailing list, you’re welcome to join!

Change #2 is changing the default search provider in Firefox to Yahoo!
Note that this won’t in any way effect the ability of a user to choose

choosing the desired provider. Note also that Yahoo! does not share any

Why?

Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT) and Yahoo! (Nasdaq:YHOO) announced today that they have received clearance for their search agreement, without restrictions, from both the U.S. Department of Justice and the European Commission, and will now turn their attention to beginning the process of implementing the deal.

Implementation of the deal is expected to begin in the coming days and will involve transitioning Yahoo!’s algorithmic and paid search platforms to Microsoft, with Yahoo! becoming the exclusive relationship sales force for both companies’ premium search advertisers globally. Once the transition is completed, the companies’ unified search marketplace will deliver improved innovation for consumers, better volume and efficiency for advertisers and better monetization opportunities for web publishers through a platform that contains a larger pool of search queries.

To me it looks like that 1+1 = Firefox of Ubuntu will soon be using Microsoft search engines and algorithms. If you know more about  and are able to clarify, please add it to the comments. What do you think, would you be happy to use Bing search engine as your search engine or are you maybe already using? Better than Google?

Koitin myös ohjelman Windows-versiota, halusin tietää, miten se on toteutettu. Niinpä latasin EXE-tiedoston ja asentelin sen Winellä Kubuntuuni. Lähinnä halusin nähdä onko tässä käytetty hyödyksi Qt:n etuja ja sama softa saatu helposti kolmelle alustalle. Latailun aikana jo katselin niin kyllä, Qt-tavaraa kovasti asennuksen aikana ilmestyy winen kansioon. Valikoita selailemalla löytyy viittaukset myös Nokiaan:

No, ei siis ajeta Qt:n päällä Wineä joka ajaa Qt-ohjelmaa.

Ajetaan suoraan Qt-ohjelmaa, eli Linux-versiota.

Ohjelman mukana seuraa kattavanoloinen opas/ohjepaketti. Samalla ohjelmalla voi tilata myös tavalliset valokuvat, erikoistuotteet jne.
Kirjaa luodessa avustajaa (‘wizard’) ei ole pakko käyttää, ajattelin kuitenkin kokeilla. Alkuun valitaan käytettävät kuvat. Päätetään sivumäärää, kuinka monta kuvaa sivulle jne.

Tämän jälkeen valitaan taustan tyyppi: kova kansi, pehmeä kansi, kangaskansi, vihko jne.

Tausta. Voin valita samanaikaisesti kuusi erilaista taustaa (musta, valkoinen, oma kuva sekä 3 automaattisesti tuumittua kuviota). Samoin voin valita useamman erilaisen tavan asetella kuvat sivuille.

Osa sivua

Kuvien lajittelu ja sijoitus voidaan määritellä kolmella tavalla, liittyen jotenkin aikasidonnaisuuteen, siis että onko kuvat lomamatkan eri päiviltä vai vuoden 2009 tapahtumista (pääsiäinen, kesäloma, joulu..), vai tiedostonimien perusteella arvotaan jotain.

Viimeisellä välilehdellä valitaan asetukset, millä perusteella kuvia voidaan karsia pois valikoimasta, siis jos kuvia on enemmän kuin sivuille mahtuisi: samanlaiset kuvat, epäterävät kuvat, ylimlottuneet kuvat ja joku ‘värikkäät kuvat’.

‘Näytä ryhmittely’ oli lajitellut testikuvat kahteen pakettiin – ne oli kuvattu n. kahtena viikonloppuna, välissä oli useampi vuosi. ‘Albumin luonti’ teki jotain, tämän jälkeen se ehdotti kaikista salamalla otetuista kuvista punasilmäisyyden poistoa: ‘Poistetaanko?’, ‘Kyllä/En’. Lienee lueskellut EXIF-tietoja kuvista.

No, kun nämä naputtelin läpi (olisin voinut myös valita ‘tee tämä kaikille’ tms), sain eteeni kirjan, johon kuvat oli heitelty valmiiksi sivuille. Pystykuvia se ei ollut osannut kääntää pystyyn. Sivuille oli heitetty yksi kuva taustalle ja loput sitten siihen päälle. Joihinkin tarkoituksiin kovin rauhaton tapa mutta lienee jotenkin itse päätettävissä. Sivujen asettelua sai helposti muokattua hilaamalla vain uusi ‘leiska’ vanhan päälle. Kuvat päällekkäin, vierekkäin, kulmittain, tekstilaatikoita.. Myös taustavärin vaihto oli helppo homma, hilataan vain uusi taustaväri tai -kuvio sivun päälle.

Ohjelmassa on tallennusominaisuudet, tilausominaisuudet jne jne. Asetukset vaikuttavat monipuolisilta. Myös ‘tallenna nimellä…’ löytyy: ohjelma tallentaa jonkinlaiseen XML -formaattiin:

Kullekin kuvalle voi tehdä kaikenlaisia muokkauksia: säätää sävyjä, käännellä ja peilailla, skaalata, rajata, puuttua kirkkauteen, kontrastiin, värikylläisyyteen, ‘color’ ja ‘hue’ sekä tietysti poistaa punaisia silmiä. Kunkin käsitellyn kuvan pystyi jopa tallentamaan vielä ohjelman ulkopuolelle jpg:nä.

Alun päivitysohjelma yritti latailla uusia hinnastoja, mahdollisesti siinä kuitenkaan onnistumatta. Tämä tuntuu vähän aiheuttavan jotain häikkää tilaussivulla hintojen laskemisessa.

Tilatessa pitää rekisteröityiä palvelun käyttäjäksi syöttämällä kaikenlaisia tietoja.

Summa summarum

Ei valittamista. Tuntuu toimivan ihan uskottavasti. Gigantin painojäljestä, hinnoista, toimitusajoista en tiedä, ohjelma kuitenkin toimii Linuxissa uskottavan hyvin, pienistä puutteista ja käännöskukkasista huolimatta.

Installation

Yes, you can run Spotify also on Linux. You’ll need Wine for that. Check installation instructions for Linux.

Spotify URLs

No matter how bad music you listen, you can always share it with your friends! Right click on track -> Copy HTTP Link. Send this link to your friend, just paste it to e-mail, instant message or Facebook.

Now some things that you can do with an URL you receive.

• Paste it to http://spotify.url.fi/ to see what song it is.
• Paste it to the search field of Spotify client to open the song / playlist.
• Open it in directly in your browser and you’ll see an ugly useless web page. It’s possible to hack also your non-windows browser to support opening the song automatically on Spotify. Instructions for Firefox (see the bottom of the page) and Konqueror (in Finnish but you’ll still be able to read the code bits.. :)

Playlists

Create you own playlists by selecting the songs, right click -> Save to.. and select either ‘New playlist’ or an existing playlist.

Share your playlists by right clicking on the playlist name -> copy HTTP Link. And share it with your friends.

You can also make a playlist ‘Collaborative’ by right click -> ‘Collaborative Playlist’. Now everyone who you’ve share the playlist with, can also edit it, and the changes will be seen by everyone who have the list loaded.

Review

Spotify’s still closed (although open source client Despotify is available). As far as I know, it’s not making any profit yet. S60 mobile client (only for premium subscriptions) is a nice idea. The ads, where a guy with a strong Swedish accent reads the text in Finnish are horrible.

Spotify is failing big time on the community aspect: Sharemyplaylists is not enough. I want to be able to add friends on the client, see what they listen and send them recommendations. How about integrated statistics?

And artists are not happy: The most played artist, Lady Gaga earned about 113 euros in 5 months, being the most player artist in Spotify. Spotify badly needs more Premiums users, and artists need badly better deals from the record labels.

However, it’s still the free best source of music in Internet having the widest selection, new releases and everything.

About IRC – I think the IRC commands are a bit of a pain.. on #tangogps, I first dropped my op rights only to realize that after that I wasnt’ able to register the channel.. So 4 of us had to leave the channel to gain admin rights again.. But I’m learning :)

It also allows me to add audio tracks (which I didn’t do – copyright stuff and didn’t spend time looking for Free music yet..), video clips etc etc. PERFECT!!
