Gigantti tarjoaa valokuvakirjantekosoftaa myös Linuxille, kts http://photo.gigantti.fi. Ajattelin laittaa testiin.

Ladattavana on setup_Gigantti_Photo_Shop.tgz -niminen paketti.

Ladataan se:

wget http://dls.photoprintit.de/download/Data/5074/hps/setup_Gigantti_Photo_Shop.tgz

Tuloksena on n. 9.1K kokoinen paketti. Puretaan se.

tar zxf setup_Gigantti_Photo_Shop.tgz

Sieltä pullahtaa ulos kaksi tiedostoa:

EULA.txt (6.6K) ja install.pl (25K)

EULA:n ensimmäine kappale kertoo tällaista:

”Gigantti Photo Shop” -ohjelman (jäljempänä ”ohjelma”) asennusta ja käyttöä koskevat lisenssi- ja käyttöehdot. Ohjelman julkaisija on CeWe Color AG & Co. OHG, Meerweg 30-32, 26133 Oldenburg.

No ei varsinaisesti yllättänyt. Vilkaistaanpas tuota install.pl:ää. Näyttäisi lataavan serveriltä jonkinlaisen indeksitiedoston jonka perusteella lataa loput. Ajetaan se.

./install.pl

Terminaalissa toimii.

Executable [application/zip] 2908186 (2.8M)
Linux Libraries [application/zip] 12509022 (12M)
Photofun [application/zip] 7995687 (7.6M)
Resources [application/zip] 30273193 (29M)
SVGTemplates [application/zip] 11740978 (11M)

Latailu kuitenkin päättyi näin iloisesti:

Tarvittavat tiedostot pakataan asennuskansioon.

Aloittaaksesi sinun pitää ajaa ‘/home/rhk/Gigantti_photoshop4.5/Gigantti Photo Shop/Gigantti Photo Shop’ -tiedosto.

No eihän tuollaista voi ajaa, välilyönnit ja kaikki, oikea ajettava on

/home/rhk/Gigantti_photoshop4.5/Gigantti\ Photo\ Shop/Gigantti\ Photo\ Shop

Ajetaan suoraan Qt-ohjelmaa, eli Linux-versiota.

Ohjelman mukana seuraa kattavanoloinen opas/ohjepaketti.

Tausta. Voin valita samanaikaisesti kuusi erilaista taustaa (musta, valkoinen, oma kuva sekä 3 automaattisesti tuumittua kuviota). Samoin voin valita useamman erilaisen tavan asetella kuvat sivuille.

Osa sivua

Ohjelmassa on tallennusominaisuudet, tilausominaisuudet jne jne. Asetukset vaikuttavat monipuolisilta. Myös ‘tallenna nimellä…’ löytyy: ohjelma tallentaa jonkinlaiseen XML -formaattiin:

fotobook producttype="17" version="3.0" isDataMcf="0" theme="normal" productname="ALB17" savetime="2010-02-18 23:21" normalpages="26" imagedir="Gigantti_mcf-Dateien" fotobooksize="QUADHARD" productvariant="" totalpages="31" startdatecalendarium="" programversion="4005004" covercolor="000000" productparameter=""

Summa summarum

Ei valittamista. Tuntuu toimivan ihan uskottavasti. Gigantin painojäljestä, hinnoista, toimitusajoista en tiedä, ohjelma kuitenkin toimii Linuxissa uskottavan hyvin, pienistä puutteista ja käännöskukkasista huolimatta.

I use KPhotoAlbum to manage the about 50 000 photos in my archive. It’s a great, powerful application to tag and find photos. However I find it a bit hard to include the edited versions of photos in the database.

So I’d like to know what would be a good method to work with original photo files and the modified versions?

Here are some ways I can come up with, all having a downside.

Keep the originals in KPhotoalbum database, modified versions outside this database, maybe under a separate KPA database. Tag all edited originals with ‘edited version available’ tag. Not very handy having to manually start KPA to work with another database and having to tag the edited to be able to use search features on them.

Both originals and edited in same folders and same KPA database, tag with same tags + original or edited tags. Problem here is that the edited version has different timestamp-> browsing files doesn’t tell you easily if a photo has an edited version available or not.

Both originals and edited in the same folder and database and use the stacking feature to group the original with the edited version, give them all the same tags. This causes a lot of manual work moving the edited next to the original image.

At the moment I have all edited versions in another folder (managed by the same KPA database as the originals). As the timestamps differ, and I have nef -> tiff -> jpg -workflow also saving the tiff, I have the tiff and jpg sitting alone in the database, far away from the original. Usually I also don’t tag these edited photos. Not good.

So what’s your way of doing this? What kind of features in KPhotoAlbum would make it easier to work with the original + edited version? How do other photo archive apps do this?

Ubuntu Open Week has some great sessions about KDE4, for example. Here’re the most important lines to me:

History of KDE4

00:02 <+Riddell> You see, at the time KDE was good
00:02 <+Riddell> Some people had planned to make a free software desktop environment and had succeeded.
00:02 <+Riddell> There was a desktop shell, a web browser, a file manager, a kick arse music player. Everything you needed
00:02 <+Riddell> But it wasn’t taking over the world
00:03 <+Riddell> It was good, but it wasn’t notably better than the rest.
00:03 <+Riddell> Along the way Windows had become not quite so crap and Mac OS had been rewritten into something really very impressive, there was also someone called Miguel who kept submitting patches to KDE that got rejected, I heard he went off and did something else
00:03 <+Riddell> So in order to take over the world we had to do better than good. Incremental improvements on what KDE was wouldn’t cut it. We had to take a long term view and make something rocking.
00:04 <+Riddell> As it happens we had a good technical foundation to make something rocking on top of, the Qt library, which was being re-written for the multi-platform bling enabled world of the next decade
00:04 <+Riddell> Qt 4 came along and that allowed a whole lot more to be done with desktop applications. It could make them beautiful.
00:04 <+Riddell> Qt 4 is a big step in taking over the world. When compositing came along people thought that was beautiful but it only added beauty between the applications. To have a truely beautiful desktop you need a powerful toolkit which can make beauty easy. Fortunately Qt 4 does that
00:05 <+Riddell> So KDE had to be rewritten and this took some time. It had to be made cross platform, easy to programme for complex things and most of all it had to be beautiful
00:05 <+Riddell> and when I say beautiful, artwork is a big part of that, but it’s a whole user experience
00:06 <+Riddell> Needless to say this affected Kubuntu a lot
00:06 <+Riddell> Kubuntu is a KDE distro. We believe that KDE is the best desktop platform and so the best distribution can be made from KDE
00:06 <+Riddell> Our hope is to make KDE shine
00:07 <+Riddell> which will make lots of happy users

00:09 <+Riddell> 4.0 came out when it did because it had been ages in the making and open source needs people to release often
00:09 <+Riddell> else the developers get bored
00:09 <+Riddell> and you don’t want that, then they’ll go getting boyfriends and girlfriends and stop doing important things like coding

Ubuntu One & KDE

00:20 <@akgraner> QUESTION: Is anyone looking into Ubuntu One integration with for example Akonadi?
00:22 <+Riddell> sandsmark: yes but not enough for it to be packaged
00:22 <+Riddell> till adams did an akonadi plugin to get akonadi talking to the couchdb address book from ubuntu one
00:22 <+Riddell> but I don’t think it got completed to the extent it would be useful for users
00:22 <+Riddell> so anyone who wants to pick that up and run with it would be most welcome

Nokia & KDE

00:32 <@akgraner> mmiicc> QUESTION: Does KDE get any help from Nokia?
00:33 <+Riddell> well Nokia funds Qt development and KDE is built on Qt, so that’s a multi million euro help there
00:33 <+Riddell> they hire a couple of KDE developers and sponsor KDE conferences and developer sprints
00:34 <+Riddell> they also give jobs to a lot of KDE developers who go on to work on Qt (which is a mixed blessing since they often stop doing so much KDE stuff)
00:34 <+Riddell> of course Nokia’s interest in KDE and Qt is self serving, they want to own the best platform for cross desktop development so that people know and love Qt
00:35 <+Riddell> and they want that working on their phones so people know and love developing for Nokia phones
00:35 <+Riddell> which is all quite mutially compatible with KDE so we’re happy with the setup

00:43 <@akgraner> QUESTION: What’s the nokia-pim-suite in KDE svn: http://websvn.kde.org/branches/work/nokia-pim-suite/
00:43 <+Riddell> not a skoobie
00:43 <+Riddell> I guess it’s something mobile related but I’ve not heard of that before
00:44 <+Riddell> kdepim is still going through the KDE 4 process
00:44 <+Riddell> the apps are ported to KDE 4 but most aren’t ported to akonadi, the new data management server
00:44 <+Riddell> so there’s loads of activity going on there

Gnome & KDE

00:46 <@akgraner> QUESTION: Any changes KDE & Gnome will join their resources to become the One Desktop to Rule Them All? Say 5, 10 years from now?
00:47 <+Riddell> that’s not really technically possible, you’d need to rewrite Gnome in Qt and I don’t think there’s much appetite for that
00:47 <+Riddell> it’s a shame we have this desktop split, it’s a horrible waste of resources
00:47 <+Riddell> but well, KDE was here first :)

Conclusion

00:59 <+Riddell> so in conclusion, KDE 4 is going to take over the world. it’s a long hard job this and we’re still getting there
00:59 <+Riddell> but it’s the best platform and that is turning into the best desktop
00:59 <+Riddell> all helpers welcome in #kubuntu-devel
01:00 <+Riddell> and remember: by becoming a Kubuntu developer you automatically become good looking

01:01 <+Riddell> < rhkfin> QUESTION: does KDE have a community manager, if, who?
01:01 <+Riddell> not that I know of, one of the charms of KDE is it’s quite non-heirarchical and everybody gets on well with everyone else with very few exceptions, it’s a great community to be in01:03
01:03 < Riddell> rhkfin: you only need community managers if you hae a dysfunctional community

Way to go KDE, and thanks for 4.3.3

Some great news around today!

KDE 4.1.2 has been released!

KDE4 is the set of programs that Kubuntu uses. From next Kubuntu release on (see below) it will be the default for all Kubuntu desktops, previous releases have been running on KDE3 series. But there’s a lot of cool stuff why you should upgrade :) I like it!

Install packages for Hardy Heron
or see Announcement & Changelog

Kubuntu Intrepid Beta has been released!

The next Kubuntu version will be officially released in a month but now there’s a beta version or a ‘preview’ for people to test & find bugs. It’ll bring KDE4 to the masses including the latest KDE 4.1.2.

See more information or upgrade instructions

Does anyone know if there are deb packages available to install a selection of KDE4 themes easily, like any other packages? Or even a repository with all the coolest themes available.

I know that now you can install new Plasma themes or window decorations by going to kde-look.org, finding a theme of your choice, downloading it, extracting it to some specific directory and then loading it with the KDE tools. I think this is not the easy way to do it.. Detailed instructions are available at pramodrt.com – as you see it’s not something you’d recommend a newbie..

I was actually able to change the theme to the Glassified mentioned in the instructions but some changes were required:

yes, you need to create the ~/.kde4/share/apps/desktoptheme directory

You need also to add the following lines in the ~/.kde4/share/config/plasmarc:

[Theme]
name=Name-of-the-directory-where-your-theme-is-ie-Glassified

Or are there plans to write some kind of theme installer and include it in KDE at some stage?

I was just informed (ubuntu-translators mailing list via Heikki) that KDE4 upstream translations would have not been imported to Rosetta, the translation tool Kubuntu and Ubuntu uses. This means that we would not see all the hard work translators have done for the KDE project to be used in distributions.

To my relief there was later an answer from Arne Goetje (a Canonical employee) in the thread:

The problem you see is with the import script, which marked all KDE4 packages as ‘need review’, because they are new. This means that someone has to review the import queue and manually (!) assign proper domain names to each template to get them approved. Further more there was a communication problem between the Rosetta and Ubuntu teams about the queue management. There is work going on as we speak to batch approve all outstanding templates and upstream translations. We will let you know when it’s done.

So it seems that it’ll be eventually fixed. I really hope that Intrepid will have a nice localized KDE4 and that we have patience to wait this fix and when it’s time, work on the strings and not get too furious about the delay and but actually do something useful to help the process.

And my thanks go to all translators, you are doing a great and important job – especially the cool Finnish translators of Ubuntu and KDE.

Disclaimer: I might not be aware of everything so don’t trust me too much :)

edit: have a look at Fixing Ubuntu translation problems in a CoC-adhering way

Someone posted a link in the irc that in the next release of Ubuntu, Intrepid Ibex, a user has to accept Firefox EULA (End User Licence Agreement) upon the first run.

A SOURCE CODE VERSION OF CERTAIN FIREFOX BROWSER FUNCTIONALITY THAT YOU MAY USE, MODIFY AND DISTRIBUTE IS AVAILABLE TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE FROM WWW.MOZILLA.ORG UNDER THE MOZILLA PUBLIC LICENSE and other open source software licenses. [full text]

To me it sounded first as a weird thing but reading the Launchpad bug report about it it started to make some sense. But it’s an annoyance anyway.

Not approving doesn’t stop you from using the browser

Someone pointed out that these digital EULA acceptances are not valid in certain countries like Finland, for example (Can someone confirm?)

There will possibly be a browser called ‘abrowser’ that’s the same browser but without Firefox branding, wrote Mark Shuttleworth

Some window explaining the idea behind the EULA as well as mentioning the alternative(s) like abrowser will possibly be shown before showing the actual EULA.

So it’s all about Mozilla believing this is what needs to be done to protect their trademark. It’s open source, right so you can do pretty much anything you want with it. But it’s the trademark. Would Iceweasel be a solution? Some say that for some reason it’s more unstable than Firefox. I do agree that as a brand Firefox is good to keep visible in Ubuntu – that’s the piece of software many people know from the Windows world but.. still.. Well right, they’re also used to click click click the EULA’s of Windows programs so it might not be that big thing for new users but long time Linux users might not like it.

I myself am looking forward to run QT version of Firefox (QT means it’s designed for KDE, not Gnome as the default Firefox is) and have already tried it. Though I’d also like too Konqueror actually conquer as a web browser.. It just doesn’t know how to render stuff, for example the latest gmail fails..

What would you click? What if some other open source programs would start requiring user accepting an EULA as well. GIMP, Gnome, Konqueror, KDE, F-spot, … Bad idea, I think.

KPhotoAlbum (Ubuntu package kphotoalbum) is the photo archive software of my choice. It handles my around 50 000 (yeah, I know my archive requires some cleaning..) photos pretty nicely.

Recently I’ve started to worry if I’ve chosen smartly, if I should have gone for digiKam, the photo management software that ships with KDE. It’s received some really nice features lately (like fuzzy search) and the development been really fast.

But then a while ago I heard that the Great Guys of KPhotoAlbum are going to travel to Denmark and have a week long Development Sprint to work on the KDE4 port of KPhotoAlbum. So this is the week when it’s happening. Jesper, Tuomas, Henner and Jan have done a great job not only working on the KDE4 port but also adding some really cool features that at the moment include (all of them not finished yet):

Multi core support for faster image loading and thumbnail generation on new computers (source)

Thumbnail file format change from png to ppm for up to 10 times faster thumbs loading (source)

Possibility to ‘stack’ images: select the best shot of a series and hide the others behind the best one (source)

EXIF/IPTC/XMP import/export thingy (source)

SQL database: faster operations. By default uses sqlite so do need to setup database server (source)

New transparent info box for the image viewer (source – check the screenshot)

For more information, check these sites:

Commit stats – around 70 commits this week so far!

Way to go people! I like you letting us users know what’s going on and I’ll be enjoying the new features, mostly the speed-up to generate and load thumbnails!

This is what I call development :)
