Eight bikes, eight bikers

Two road bikes, three hybrids, two 26″ all terrain bikes, one 26″ mountain bike

Two girls, six guys

Biking experience from haven’t-tried-this-summer to some-over-100km-trips-this-summer

Driving in two groups of four people.

A car and a driver to carry luggage & help in case something/someone breaks. This was precious!! Of course not having to carry everything on the bike made the trip much easier and faster but having warm food and sauna waiting for us when we got to the house after 10pm is something you value!

Weather: sunny/cloudy. Temperatures somewhere between 20C and 25C

Damages: Chains of one bike broke right before leaving. Got them changed quickly in a bike shop. However changing chains to old gears is not the best idea but we survived. We also had to change the seat post of one of the hybrids from the one with suspension (!?) to a normal one to be able to lower it a bit more.

We slept at a rented house in Eskilom causing less than 5km of extra riding. Sauna, food & sleep.

Statistics

My no-name-never-heard-looses-signal-doesn’t-always-store-elevation GPS tracker shows 92.41km, 362 minutes and 15.3km/h avg, 41.49km/h max for the first day and 108.59km, 403 minutes, 16.1km/h avg, 44.06km/h max. TOTAL: 201km

My SIGMA bike computer shows 196.16km, 10h 11 minutes, 19km/h average and 64.9 km/h max for the whole trip. TOTAL: 196.16Km

The battery of my dear N900 died during the first day after 67km, 294 minutes and 15.52km/h avg. For the second day it shows 106.57km, 400 minutes, 15.98km/h avg, 67.53 km/h max! The max speed is true, it’s a steep hill and the bike computer display confirmed that it was somewhere over 65km/h but for some reason it didn’t store the value. TOTAL: ??

Lesson learned: don’t answer calls, don’t update Google+ – don’t even have GSM/3G on if you want to use the GPS for a longer period!! And trying to update Google+ and ride a bike might damage your phone when it falls to gravel :(

Anders has shared his maps/tracks here: 87km and 106km. His Garmin Edge draws very nice tracks with no missed points but great elevation profile. TOTAL: 193km

From 12h 45min (sum of GPS tracker track times) I was on the road for 10h 11 minutes (SIGMA bike computer)

Last year, in 2010 there were five of us. Openmoko Freerunner stored GPS tracks of 91km and 111km for more or less the same route. TOTAL: 202km

Two years age, in 2009 I biked the same route alone in one day: 182km in 8h22min - some training and SPD pedals/shoes

x years ago, maybe around 2006 I biked the same route alone in one day in less than 10 hours. Same bike as now but almost wihtout training and no SPD pedals

in 2004 I biked the same trip with my old 26″ MTB. I had to take some smaller/longer gravel roads because of roadwork. Over 200km, total time 11h40min, time on bike was around 10h20min. It rained the whole time. Not fun.

Other

The costs were 497€ making it 62€ for each of us – or 32cnt/km :)

My Go Mobile prepaid SIM card expired on the second day. It’s valid only for one year. I lost only some euros so that’s not so bad but the idea of them being valid for a limited time (and not even x months after the latest call) is insane – and for sure they make money with the money people have there when the card expires! Can’t really recommend Go Mobile – see my previous experiences (FIN only).

But this time it was a nice trip again. Not too hard or extreme so maybe something harder next year? Same trip in a day? Who’s in?

Thanks Anders, Eino, Hanna, Katja, Matti, Olli, Tapio and Vesa – it was fun!

Bus 007 Device 002: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port

As you see, connecting it to Linux over USB shows it as Prolific PL2303 Serial Port USB adapter and it appeared as /dev/ttyUSB1

To make Wine see the USB serial port, run ln -s /dev/ttyUSB1 ~/.wine/dosdevices/com1

I was able to install the program smoothly. It runs but the built-in Google Maps view doesn’t work. However I’m able to download the track from the device and save it in .track format. Now when I open this .track format with the app, it gives me the option to store KML and GPX.

However saving in GPX (and KML?) fails and the result is a broken GPX as the program, for some reason, writes coordinates in

        <trkpt lat="60,921448" lon="27,548304">

instead of

        <trkpt lat="60.921448" lon="27.548304">

so search and replace all commas (,) to periods (.) and the tracks start to behave.

A nice device with a decent battery duration, about 10 hours or so on two AAA’s it needs. GPS track isn’t that great: most of the time it’s missing the elevation information and then every now and then it takes me to over 20 kilometers. However it gives easily a nice overview of the route.

#Muutetaan googlen KML-tiedosto GPX-muotoon
gpsbabel -i kml -f fillari2011_osa2.kml -o gpx -F fillari2011_osa2.gpx

# Kirjoitellaan Kevyen liikenteen reittioppaan reitin pisteisiin aikaleimat (alkaen 5.8.2011 klo 16:00:00, kahden pisteen etäisyys 5 sekuntia)
gpsbabel -i gpx -f fillari2011_osa1.gpx -x track,faketime=20110805160000+5 -o gpx -F fillari2011_osa1_ajat.gpx

# Kirjoitellaan Googlen reitin pisteisiin aikaleimat (alkaen 5.8.2011 21:00:00 lisäten jokaiseen pisteeseen 5 sekuntia)
gpsbabel -i gpx -f fillari2011_osa2.gpx -x track,faketime=20110805210000+5 -o gpx -F fillari2011_osa2_ajat.gpx

# Yhdistetään kaksi reittiä yhdeksi aikaleimojen mukaisessa järjestyksessä
gpsbabel -i gpx -f fillari2011_osa1_ajat.gpx -i gpx -f fillari2011_osa2_ajat.gpx -x track,pack -o gpx -F kokoreitti.gpx

WIN!

I’ve been recently playing with GPS devices on Linux (for example i-gotU gt-120, and the linux software to download tracks). I’ve also been discussing gps+heart rate data storage options. The obvious choice is (ex-Nokia) Sports Tracker and it didn’t even cross my mind that you could do something like this with local Linux software.

But it’s useless to ever think like that – you’re surprised with the variety of apps that are available and developed for Linux.
I bumped to this blog post on Planet KDE: Sports Activity Tracking App: The Baby Needs a Name.

And it looks awesome.

Reading the comments I found some other apps that do more or less the same, and Google gave me even more. So here’s just a quick list of GPS / HRM apps you might want to have a look if they’d be useful for you:

Then Unnamed / Kardio / Kilometer / …

Sportstracker

Polarview

Sonicread

Polarscope

Pytrainer

Viking

Marble

FoxtrotGPS

OpenDMTP

GPX viewer

GPSBabel

QLandkarte M/GT

OpenGTS

and the list goes on….So far I’ve been using GPSBabel to convert and Viking to analyze and clean the data, but now I might find some new neat tools… I don’t have a HRM, only GPS (Openmoko Freerunner), so I’d like an app to be able to visualize the track on (OpenStreet)Map like Viking does, but then maybe also somehow store the tracks. It’s a pain to have hundreds of GPX files in folders, some kind of tool to search would be neat. Maybe KPhotoalbum will some day be extended to manage any data, not just photos and videos :)A great place to discuss free GPS software is the FOSS-GPS mailing list, you’re welcome to join!

Do you have any experience on some of these apps? What features they miss? What’s the coolest thing they can do?

The news are out now – tangoGPS has been forked.

tangogps is an easy to use, fast and lightweight mapping application for use with or without GPS. (tangoGPS web site)

FoxtrotGPS is an offshoot of Marcus Bauer’s excellent tangoGPS application, with a focus on cooperation and fostering community innovation. (FoxtrotGPS web site)

And it’s all GPL’d (read: ‘free & libre open source software’). Read the full announcement on FOSS-GPS mailing list.

Nothing much to add to that. Now go & check http://www.foxtrotgps.org/, subscribe to the FOSS-GPS mailing list, join the #foxtrotgps IRC channel and let your ideas, contributions and wishes flow! I’d expect the first release to be out soonish so have your Ubuntus, Freerunners and eeePCs ready!

Paikkatietopalvelut

Paikkatietopalvelut (LBS, Location-based Services) on nyt kuuma juttu netissä ja kaikki haluavat osansa käyttäjien rahoista. Youlocin takana olevat ihmiset eivät siitä pidä, vaan haluamme (juu, minäkin kuulun tähän jengiin :) sijaintitietomme olevan vapaassa käytössä silloin, ja sillä tavalla kuin itse haluamme. Olemassaolevat kaupalliset palvelut rajoittavat paljon paikkatiedon käyttömahdollisuuksia.

Tällä hetkellä Youloc on prototyyppivaiheessa (kuten yllä ehkä huomasit). Tarkoituksena on mahdollistaa GPS-tietojen tallentaminen palveluun joko reaaliaikaisesti (esim. puhelimen 3G- tai GPRS-yhteyksien yli) tai jälkikäteen lähettämällä tallennettu GPS-jälki palveluun. Reaaliaikaisen liikkeen tiedot voi halutessaan jakaa ystävilleen tai perheenjäsenille esimerkiksi kesäisen fillariretken etenemisen seuraamiseksi. Tarkoitus on tarjota myös analyysi GPS-tiedoista, esimerkiksi nopeuden muutos matkan edetessä tai ehkä jopa 3D-kuvaaja reitistä. Ehkäpä geotagattuja valokuvia tai viestejä lähellä oleville ystävillesi?

Youlocin ensimmäinen versio on kehitetty URSA:n myrskynbongausjaoston käyttöön ja heidän toiveiden mukaisesti, kts Bustolakartta.

Uuteen vauhtiin

Joitain alustavia suunnitelmia on jo kirjoitettu muistiin, kts http://etherpad.com/7B9QpXb17C

Ilmoittaudu kokoukseen mukaan osoitteessa http://doodle.com/4bmwrcicd3rte2pv ja saadaksesi ilmoituksen kokouspaikasta, lähetä sähköposti osoitteeseen whiz at iki piste fi.

It takes usually some 40-120 seconds for Freerunner GPS to get the first fix (TTFF = Time To First Fix) after powering on the GPS (and starting gpsd?). Some months ago I heard about AGPS or Assisted GPS which basically means that the current location of GPS satellites is downloaded from a server over GPRS. So I added AGPS in my Openmoko Ideas/Wishlist – if commercial phones can do it, why couldn’t Freerunner :)

Today I saw agps package released at opkg.org and I had to try it. This it how you can make it work on 2008.12

Make sure your GPS & GPRS work. Kustomizer will install all required packages for this on a clean 2008.12.

Register for an agps account by emailing: agps-account@u-blox.com – no worries, it’s free

Install AGPS package on your Freerunner: http://www.opkg.org/package_127.html

Edit /usr/bin/agps on Freerunner. Let’s add some required information:

Find the coordinates where you live at Openstreetmap (scroll to your place , click ‘permalink’ and copy the coordinates from the url: http://openstreetmap.org/?lat=60.976&lon=25.6942&zoom=12&layers=B000FTF turns into -la 60.97 -lo 25.6942

Google the approximate height of the place where you live, in meters. -a 40 for 40 meters

Decide the precision ie. the radius of the area (in kilometers) in where you want to use agps. The smaller the radius, the better the precision. -p 150 for 150km radius, 300km diameter.

Check your email for agps user information. Your username is your e-mail address and they give you a password, for example qw3rtY. This gives you -u email@address.com -k qw3rtY

To get the full information from the server, we use -c full

Change the agps-onlinec -line to something like this:
/usr/bin/agpsc-onlinec -c full -u email@address.com -k qw3rt -la 60.976 -lo 25.6942 -al 40 -p 150

If you want, you can add gpsdcontrol.py in the beginning of the file to start gpsd when agps is run

That’s it!

Start GPRS, run AGPS, run Tangogps. Agps downloads about 4k of satellite information from ublox servers and Tangogps starts to show you that it sees about 13 satellites (even if you’re inside :). On my first trial it took 19s to get a good fix, including starting of gpsd. Nice :)

Enjoy your freedom!

Thanks to Joseph Reeves for the package!

I have an Openmoko Freerunner phone and I like it a lot. OK, it has some glitches (like I don’t feel comfortable using it as my daily phone because of the bad battery duration and audio quality, both fixable with software) but it has GPS, accelerometers, GPRS, WLAN and Linux so I’m pretty happy and waiting for the software to become more usable. Since this is my first GPS device I’m kind of interested in the GPS tools and applications and here’s a short review of some tools I’ve tried.

Gpssight

projects.openmoko.org
wiki.openmoko.org

Gpssight

GOOD

Basic statistics

Draws track where the dots have different color according to the speed or height – cool feature!

Is able to sync Freerunner clock (though I don’t think I’ve ever managed to make it work..)

BAD

small buttons in the UI

no satellite signal strength information

Agpsui

projects.openmoko.org
wiki.openmoko.org

agpsui

agpsui

GOOD

Shows a lot of information about the connection: map, individual satellite signal strengths, position plot, signal log etc

helps to test different restarts (cold/warm/hot)

BAD

after first fix pretty useless to a normal user

small UI buttons

TangoGPS

tangogps.org
wiki.openmoko.org

Tangogps

Tangogps

GOOD

most comprehensive

saves tracks (that need to be converted to .gpx before they can be used) to upload to Openstreetmap or other tools

uses Openstreetmap as well as other map sources

is able to show geotagged photos (haven’t tried)

can save and load POC:s and show friends (though I have no idea how it works and where the data is stored and so on)

BAD

Nothing really bad but there are some features missing to make it really smooth & usable. See my wishes below.

WISHLIST

zoom to show 1 pix as 4pix or so (the high dpi of Freerunner isn’t always good, if the device is not so close to your eyes)

Show better information about the satellites – signal strength for each satellite would be nice.

GPX data format for better compability

Ability to show GPX tracks (ie. create a track on the desktop, upload to phone and follow the track to get to places)

multiple waypoints for more complex navigation

default location where to go if no GPS signal available

possibility to give a custom text to catenate in the saved gps track filename

As you see TangoGPS get’s most of my attention as the best and most usable tool there is available at the moment.. Feel free to implement my wishes :)

Other software

I haven’t tried the locations tool of 2008.8 or 2008.9. I also know that gpsd is running somewhere down there but I have no opinion about it. If it works, its good :)

At Openmoko Projects page you can find more GPS software as well as in the GPS apps wiki page. I’ll propably have to try some of those as they get more mature or so. I should also learn to use navigation software like Navit.

If you’re interested in further open source GPS discussion (not only for Freerunner) you’re welcome to join the foss-gps mailing list.

Yesterday I wrote about this idea to start a mailing list to gather Open Source developers and users to a single mailing list to share their ideas, announce releases, share patches and so on on a single list. Only a day later it’s reality so now I warmly welcome all FOSS GPS software developers and users to foss-gps@lists.osgeo.org

Developers & project managers

First thing first, I think it’s vital for an open source project to communicate with the community – the end users of your software.

It’s useless for all projects to have their own mailing list so this FOSS-GPS is a nice tool for you to get in contact with the community.

Join the list to hear what the users think of your software. Ask them what kind of features they would like to to see in the following releases. Encourage skilled users to send patches. Release alpha and beta versions to be tested and get your feedback. Share ideas and solutions with other developers to get the most out of GPS. Let the community know how your project is doing, where would a path or two be needed and so on. Maybe you need a translation.

If your project already has a mailing list or a forum it’s still useful to join to hear what the users think and also let more users know right away about your releases.

You’re welcome to join the list! Write a little introduction when you join so people know that your project is there. Also tell about the list on your project web page to let the users know where to go to contact you and other users in case they want some more information about the software.

Users

Do you want to know what’s happening in the Open Source GPS world? What are the hottest programs and features? Maybe you want to know if your favorite program will release a new version soon and help them by testing the beta version. Or do you want to share your experiences about the software: what are the best features, what’s still missing? What did you find when you needed a tool to import gps tracks or navigate?

You’re welcome to join the list! Write a little ‘Hello World’ note telling who you are, what GPS software you use and so on. If you’re on some forums that have people who might be interested about this it’s more than encouraged to spread the world! Tell the developer of your favourite programs to join the list to get the latest from the community.

Host

After a long search finding mostly unrelated lists I was suggested to check OSgeo.org to host the list. I had never even heard about it but from the first minute on it seemed like a perfect match:

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation, or OSGeo, is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support and promote the collaborative development of open geospatial technologies and data. The foundation provides financial, organizational and legal support to the broader open source geospatial community…. [read more]

So I wrote to their discussion mailing list and also joined the IRC channel to ask what they think. They agreed that there was a need for a list like this and that they’d be happy to host it. I think that there couldn’t have been a better place to host this list. Non-profit, open geospatial technologies. I want to thank OSGeo for this. I’m sure the list will help many projects to advance through code sharing, user feedback, developer discussions and so on. The number of GPS devices out there is growing all the time and there is also more and more GPS users who would like to use their devices with Open Source software. Go and have a look at osgeo.org and see all the cool projects they have there!

More information

As far as I know, there isn’t any simple or single way to communicate with the people who use GPS devices with Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) or the developers of these programs. Maybe now it’s the time to start one when all kinds of positioning tools and services are becoming more and more popular.

(C) Marble

My experience is that the community is widely spread: some get their FLOSS-GPS updates from Openstreetmap lists, some from Openmoko mailing lists. Some communicate directly with the developers, possible some hang around in the irc channels and forums.

I think there are many projects that would benefit from some common discussion. A common list would also help the users to contribute to the projects: translations, patches, testing and so on. Users could share their experiences, tips and hints. Developers could share their ‘best practices’. And you would have only one single mailing list and you’d stay updated about the FLOSS-GPS -world instead of needing to join to 10-15 different forums and lists. Share, communicate, centralize.

Here are some projects where we’d able to find people that could be interested:
