Ubuntu on näistä yksi.

Ubuntun starttasi Etelä-Afrikkalainen it-kuplan aikaan rikastunut Mark Shuttleworth.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RistoHKurppa

VALO

Kts esim. http://www.valo-cd.fi/ohjelmat

Tämän saman vapauden piiriin lukeutuu mm. Wikipedia, Librivox-äänikirjat, Openstreetmap.org -karttapalvelu. Kts lisää http://www.vapaasuomi.fi/

VALO on hyvää vauhtia leviämässä myös Tampereen hallintoon: http://blog.ubuntu-fi.org/2011/valoa-tampereella/

Time lapse photography is a method of creating films by taking a series of photos with constant interval, for example one minute, and then combining them together as a movie.

I was sick a while ago. The first day I didn’t do much but sleep and read comics. The second day, the most exciting event of the day was to see how the frost flowers in the window melted. In the morning it was about -27C but then during the day the sun heated the window so much that the frost flowers melted away. Seeing new flowers in the window the following morning, I decided to try to make a time lapse video of how they melt.

Code to control the camera

First, I grapped a piece of old camera control code from one of my old posts. gphoto2 is able to control my Nikon D70 DSLR over USB: tell it to take a shot, download the image and so on. So this is the code I ended up with:

for i in {1..400};
do
echo "#################"
echo "Photo $i"
date
echo "#################"

#capture a photo
gphoto2 --capture-image &
sleep 60
gphoto2 --get-file=$i
done

This takes a picture, waits for 60 seconds, downloads the previous picture, and starts it all over again. As it does this for 400 times, it should give me almost 7 hours of shooting time.

Notes

Nikon D70, on manual mode, 1/800s, F7.1, manual focus

Sigma F2.8 105mm macro lens

D70 needs to be set to PTP mode and also had to set the camera to store on the memory card (see gphoto2 –set-config-something..)

Make sure you have enough space on the card! If this is a problem, you can also remove files from the camera using gphoto2 -D …

Make sure you start with a full battery. I did. It went empty. Tried to replace it – only to find out that also my backup battery was empty. Fail.

Don’t move the camera. Don’t touch it!

During the shooting, I had this one-liner running in the folder where the images were downloaded:
while true; do gwenview -s . && sleep 300; pkill gwenview; done
to see some of the images on the screen all the time. It’d be nice if gwenview would integrate new files in the slideshow folder to the running slideshow, but as this didn’t work, I needed to kill and restart it every now and then to see the latest results.

Converting JPG files to video

It sure wasn’t easy to figure out a decent way to do this. But this is how I did it:

Create a 3008x2000px (same as my camera resolution) jpg to use as title of the movie

Save 4 copies of it (title1.jpg title2.jpg etc..)

Create 1 second title clip:
mencoder -nosound mf://*.jpeg -mf w=1504:h=1000:type=jpg:fps=8 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=2160000:v4mv -o title.avi

Create the ‘main film’:
mencoder -nosound mf://*.JPG -mf w=1504:h=1000:type=jpg:fps=8 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=2160000:v4mv -o movie.avi

Join these together:
avimerge -o final.avi -i title.avi title.avi title.avi movie.avi title.avi title.avi

Result

I’ve been recently playing with GPS devices on Linux (for example i-gotU gt-120, and the linux software to download tracks). I’ve also been discussing gps+heart rate data storage options. The obvious choice is (ex-Nokia) Sports Tracker and it didn’t even cross my mind that you could do something like this with local Linux software.

But it’s useless to ever think like that – you’re surprised with the variety of apps that are available and developed for Linux.
I bumped to this blog post on Planet KDE: Sports Activity Tracking App: The Baby Needs a Name.

And it looks awesome.

Reading the comments I found some other apps that do more or less the same, and Google gave me even more. So here’s just a quick list of GPS / HRM apps you might want to have a look if they’d be useful for you:

Then Unnamed / Kardio / Kilometer / …

Sportstracker

Polarview

Sonicread

Polarscope

Pytrainer

Viking

Marble

FoxtrotGPS

OpenDMTP

GPX viewer

GPSBabel

QLandkarte M/GT

OpenGTS

and the list goes on….So far I’ve been using GPSBabel to convert and Viking to analyze and clean the data, but now I might find some new neat tools… I don’t have a HRM, only GPS (Openmoko Freerunner), so I’d like an app to be able to visualize the track on (OpenStreet)Map like Viking does, but then maybe also somehow store the tracks. It’s a pain to have hundreds of GPX files in folders, some kind of tool to search would be neat. Maybe KPhotoalbum will some day be extended to manage any data, not just photos and videos :)A great place to discuss free GPS software is the FOSS-GPS mailing list, you’re welcome to join!

Do you have any experience on some of these apps? What features they miss? What’s the coolest thing they can do?

I’m planning to wipe my Kubuntu desktop box root partition to re-install Kubuntu 10.04 LTS. I don’t have any major problems that would force me to reinstall the system, but I’ve installed many apps and packages from outside the repositories, manually and so on, so it’s quite hard to try to track down why something doesn’t work and then report the bug. And it’s nice to see the installer every now and then anyway, get a fresh start, tabula rasa, you know.

This is my setup:

File system. Size Used Free Use% Mount
/dev/md0 38G 26G 11G 71% /
/dev/md1 319G 276G 27G 92% /home

First I ran backups to an external 500GB USB disk:

time rsync -av --progress --stats /home/rhk /media/disk/2010-07-24-homebackup/

Then I decided to find out how long I’ve been running this system. A neat way to find it out is to find when the file system has been created:

rhk@rubert:~$ sudo tune2fs -l /dev/md0|grep created
Filesystem created: Wed Jul 9 17:35:59 2008
rhk@rubert:~$ sudo tune2fs -l /dev/md1|grep created
Filesystem created: Tue May 8 22:31:04 2007

So I’ve had my setup running since July 2008, from Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04, upgrading to 8.10, then to 9.04, 9.10 and to 10.04. My home partition has been there since May 2007 – that’s when I got this computer and first installed Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04.

~daily usage, I think running two years in a row isn’t that bad, every now and then installing some off-the-repository packages. And as stated above, there’s still nothing that’d force me to reinstall it.

How long have you had your setup running? Are you always upgrading to the latest version or staying with LTS releases? Do you often install software outside the repositories?

Happened last Wednesday, the day before the release of Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx LTS at Ubuntu-fi teams IRC channel (#ubuntu-fi-tiimit @ Freenode).

Someone organizing the Ubuntufest release party at Tampere, Finland on 5th of May (Akademy 2010 will also be there this summer!) asked if we’re planning to write a press release of the new Ubuntu release. Well.. it was on our TODO list but it really didn’t look like anyone would have the resources to write one like we’ve done earlier.

So I decided to run a small test on the community – would it be possible to create a press release without making it a pain to anyone. I opened an Etherpad, copied the original English press release there and annouced it on the same #ubuntu-fi-tiimit IRC channel requesting people to join to translate it.

Etherpad

Etherpad used to be a proprietary, but free (as ‘no money asked from you to use it’) service at etherpad.com. Then came Google, bought it, disabled it for a while, open sourced it, reassigned the developers to work on Google Buzz and now finally shuts Etherpad completely down. Quite exactly what happened with Jaiku, the Finnish microblogging service some years ago: Bought it, Open sourced it, reassigned developers to work on Buzzz. Jaiku is still up&running as it was moved it over to Google App Engine.

So now as Etherpad is open source, there are open source versions of it, see piratepad.net, pad.ubuntu-uk.org and http://etherpad.org/etherpadsites.html

The cool thing with Etherpad is that anyone can use it without a need to register or log in. Many people can edit the same file at the same time and they will immediately see the changes the others make. You can save revisions, export the files as txt, html, pdf and so on. It’s also great to see how the text is color coded: each user has his own color so it’s quite easy to see what has changed and so on. It also features an awesome time slider letting you to see when the changes have been made and so on.

Results

Screenshot of the press release - click to see it bigger

In less than two hours we had a press release, translated by around 10 people. See the screenshot on the right to see how one sentence can be edited by many people – and still make sense. At least to us, who read Finnish ;)

Releasing (=mailing it to news papers and other contacts) started immediately. This resulted a nice visibility in Finnish IT magazines – we’re still waiting for the break through on non-IT magazines :/

You can see the pad we used here: http://pad.ubuntu-uk.org/JnzhILi8dT (Thanks Ubuntu UK for supporting us :)

So I can recommend Etherpad to you and your community – it’s an awesome tool to allow your volunteers to skip all unnecessary registrations and focus on the results.

Thanks for everyone who contributed. You can check the final press release at Ubuntu-fi wiki.

ps. My guess is that Google will buy Doodle and ‘do the magic’ there in the following 12 months ;)

Will Firefox in Ubuntu soon use Microsoft Bing as the default search engine? Some press releases / announcements are out that can be interpreted so.

July 2009 / Microsoft Press Release

Yahoo! and Microsoft announced an agreement that will improve the Web search experience for users and advertisers, and deliver sustained innovation to the industry. In simple terms, Microsoft will now power Yahoo! search while Yahoo! will become the exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies’ premium search advertisers.

January 2010 / Ubuntu Desktop Mailing List

Change #2 is changing the default search provider in Firefox to Yahoo!
Note that this won’t in any way effect the ability of a user to choose
and use the search provider of their choice. It’s literally 2 easily
discoverable clicks to change this setting, a simple matter of switching
to that search provider in the chrome by clicking on the icon and
choosing the desired provider. Note also that Yahoo! does not share any
personally identifiable or usage information.

Why?
I am pursuing this change because Canonical has negotiated a revenue
sharing deal with Yahoo! and this revenue will help Canonical to provide
developers and resources to continue the open development of Ubuntu and
the Ubuntu Platform. This change will help provide these resources as
well as continuing to respect our user’s default search across Firefox.

February 2010 / Yahoo Press Release

Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT) and Yahoo! (Nasdaq:YHOO) announced today that they have received clearance for their search agreement, without restrictions, from both the U.S. Department of Justice and the European Commission, and will now turn their attention to beginning the process of implementing the deal.

Implementation of the deal is expected to begin in the coming days and will involve transitioning Yahoo!’s algorithmic and paid search platforms to Microsoft, with Yahoo! becoming the exclusive relationship sales force for both companies’ premium search advertisers globally. Once the transition is completed, the companies’ unified search marketplace will deliver improved innovation for consumers, better volume and efficiency for advertisers and better monetization opportunities for web publishers through a platform that contains a larger pool of search queries.

To me it looks like that 1+1 = Firefox of Ubuntu will soon be using Microsoft search engines and algorithms. If you know more about and are able to clarify, please add it to the comments. What do you think, would you be happy to use Bing search engine as your search engine or are you maybe already using? Better than Google?

Thanks Aapo for the tip!

Gigantti tarjoaa valokuvakirjantekosoftaa myös Linuxille, kts http://photo.gigantti.fi. Ajattelin laittaa testiin.

Ladattavana on setup_Gigantti_Photo_Shop.tgz -niminen paketti.

Ladataan se:

wget http://dls.photoprintit.de/download/Data/5074/hps/setup_Gigantti_Photo_Shop.tgz

Tuloksena on n. 9.1K kokoinen paketti. Puretaan se.

tar zxf setup_Gigantti_Photo_Shop.tgz

Sieltä pullahtaa ulos kaksi tiedostoa:

EULA.txt (6.6K) ja install.pl (25K)

EULA:n ensimmäine kappale kertoo tällaista:

”Gigantti Photo Shop” -ohjelman (jäljempänä ”ohjelma”) asennusta ja käyttöä koskevat lisenssi- ja käyttöehdot. Ohjelman julkaisija on CeWe Color AG & Co. OHG, Meerweg 30-32, 26133 Oldenburg.

No ei varsinaisesti yllättänyt. Vilkaistaanpas tuota install.pl:ää. Näyttäisi lataavan serveriltä jonkinlaisen indeksitiedoston jonka perusteella lataa loput. Ajetaan se.

./install.pl

Terminaalissa toimii.

Executable [application/zip] 2908186 (2.8M)
Linux Libraries [application/zip] 12509022 (12M)
Photofun [application/zip] 7995687 (7.6M)
Resources [application/zip] 30273193 (29M)
SVGTemplates [application/zip] 11740978 (11M)

Latailu kuitenkin päättyi näin iloisesti:

Tarvittavat tiedostot pakataan asennuskansioon.

Aloittaaksesi sinun pitää ajaa ‘/home/rhk/Gigantti_photoshop4.5/Gigantti Photo Shop/Gigantti Photo Shop’ -tiedosto.

No eihän tuollaista voi ajaa, välilyönnit ja kaikki, oikea ajettava on

/home/rhk/Gigantti_photoshop4.5/Gigantti\ Photo\ Shop/Gigantti\ Photo\ Shop

Ajetaan suoraan Qt-ohjelmaa, eli Linux-versiota.

Ohjelman mukana seuraa kattavanoloinen opas/ohjepaketti.

Tausta. Voin valita samanaikaisesti kuusi erilaista taustaa (musta, valkoinen, oma kuva sekä 3 automaattisesti tuumittua kuviota). Samoin voin valita useamman erilaisen tavan asetella kuvat sivuille.

Osa sivua

Ohjelmassa on tallennusominaisuudet, tilausominaisuudet jne jne. Asetukset vaikuttavat monipuolisilta. Myös ‘tallenna nimellä…’ löytyy: ohjelma tallentaa jonkinlaiseen XML -formaattiin:

fotobook producttype="17" version="3.0" isDataMcf="0" theme="normal" productname="ALB17" savetime="2010-02-18 23:21" normalpages="26" imagedir="Gigantti_mcf-Dateien" fotobooksize="QUADHARD" productvariant="" totalpages="31" startdatecalendarium="" programversion="4005004" covercolor="000000" productparameter=""

Summa summarum

Ei valittamista. Tuntuu toimivan ihan uskottavasti. Gigantin painojäljestä, hinnoista, toimitusajoista en tiedä, ohjelma kuitenkin toimii Linuxissa uskottavan hyvin, pienistä puutteista ja käännöskukkasista huolimatta.

For long I’ve been trying to find something to create photo shows with Linux. So far Cinelerra has been the best choice but being.. well, not as simple as I’d hope it to be, I haven’t been able to create any photo shows. Then I found Smile – and here’s a result from playing maybe 10 minutes. Took some random photos from my travels.

It also allows me to add audio tracks (which I didn’t do – copyright stuff and didn’t spend time looking for Free music yet..), video clips etc etc. PERFECT!!

PPA for Ubuntu Packages
Smile Homepage
Gaspa isn’t maintaining the package any more – I’d so much appreciate it if someone would be able to take over the package and take it all the way to Debian/Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Open Week has some great sessions about KDE4, for example. Here’re the most important lines to me:

History of KDE4

00:02 <+Riddell> You see, at the time KDE was good
00:02 <+Riddell> Some people had planned to make a free software desktop environment and had succeeded.
00:02 <+Riddell> There was a desktop shell, a web browser, a file manager, a kick arse music player. Everything you needed
00:02 <+Riddell> But it wasn’t taking over the world
00:03 <+Riddell> It was good, but it wasn’t notably better than the rest.
00:03 <+Riddell> Along the way Windows had become not quite so crap and Mac OS had been rewritten into something really very impressive, there was also someone called Miguel who kept submitting patches to KDE that got rejected, I heard he went off and did something else
00:03 <+Riddell> So in order to take over the world we had to do better than good. Incremental improvements on what KDE was wouldn’t cut it. We had to take a long term view and make something rocking.
00:04 <+Riddell> As it happens we had a good technical foundation to make something rocking on top of, the Qt library, which was being re-written for the multi-platform bling enabled world of the next decade
00:04 <+Riddell> Qt 4 came along and that allowed a whole lot more to be done with desktop applications. It could make them beautiful.
00:04 <+Riddell> Qt 4 is a big step in taking over the world. When compositing came along people thought that was beautiful but it only added beauty between the applications. To have a truely beautiful desktop you need a powerful toolkit which can make beauty easy. Fortunately Qt 4 does that
00:05 <+Riddell> So KDE had to be rewritten and this took some time. It had to be made cross platform, easy to programme for complex things and most of all it had to be beautiful
00:05 <+Riddell> and when I say beautiful, artwork is a big part of that, but it’s a whole user experience
00:06 <+Riddell> Needless to say this affected Kubuntu a lot
00:06 <+Riddell> Kubuntu is a KDE distro. We believe that KDE is the best desktop platform and so the best distribution can be made from KDE
00:06 <+Riddell> Our hope is to make KDE shine
00:07 <+Riddell> which will make lots of happy users

00:09 <+Riddell> 4.0 came out when it did because it had been ages in the making and open source needs people to release often
00:09 <+Riddell> else the developers get bored
00:09 <+Riddell> and you don’t want that, then they’ll go getting boyfriends and girlfriends and stop doing important things like coding

Ubuntu One & KDE

00:20 <@akgraner> QUESTION: Is anyone looking into Ubuntu One integration with for example Akonadi?
00:22 <+Riddell> sandsmark: yes but not enough for it to be packaged
00:22 <+Riddell> till adams did an akonadi plugin to get akonadi talking to the couchdb address book from ubuntu one
00:22 <+Riddell> but I don’t think it got completed to the extent it would be useful for users
00:22 <+Riddell> so anyone who wants to pick that up and run with it would be most welcome

Nokia & KDE

00:32 <@akgraner> mmiicc> QUESTION: Does KDE get any help from Nokia?
00:33 <+Riddell> well Nokia funds Qt development and KDE is built on Qt, so that’s a multi million euro help there
00:33 <+Riddell> they hire a couple of KDE developers and sponsor KDE conferences and developer sprints
00:34 <+Riddell> they also give jobs to a lot of KDE developers who go on to work on Qt (which is a mixed blessing since they often stop doing so much KDE stuff)
00:34 <+Riddell> of course Nokia’s interest in KDE and Qt is self serving, they want to own the best platform for cross desktop development so that people know and love Qt
00:35 <+Riddell> and they want that working on their phones so people know and love developing for Nokia phones
00:35 <+Riddell> which is all quite mutially compatible with KDE so we’re happy with the setup

00:43 <@akgraner> QUESTION: What’s the nokia-pim-suite in KDE svn: http://websvn.kde.org/branches/work/nokia-pim-suite/
00:43 <+Riddell> not a skoobie
00:43 <+Riddell> I guess it’s something mobile related but I’ve not heard of that before
00:44 <+Riddell> kdepim is still going through the KDE 4 process
00:44 <+Riddell> the apps are ported to KDE 4 but most aren’t ported to akonadi, the new data management server
00:44 <+Riddell> so there’s loads of activity going on there

Gnome & KDE

00:46 <@akgraner> QUESTION: Any changes KDE & Gnome will join their resources to become the One Desktop to Rule Them All? Say 5, 10 years from now?
00:47 <+Riddell> that’s not really technically possible, you’d need to rewrite Gnome in Qt and I don’t think there’s much appetite for that
00:47 <+Riddell> it’s a shame we have this desktop split, it’s a horrible waste of resources
00:47 <+Riddell> but well, KDE was here first :)

Conclusion

00:59 <+Riddell> so in conclusion, KDE 4 is going to take over the world. it’s a long hard job this and we’re still getting there
00:59 <+Riddell> but it’s the best platform and that is turning into the best desktop
00:59 <+Riddell> all helpers welcome in #kubuntu-devel
01:00 <+Riddell> and remember: by becoming a Kubuntu developer you automatically become good looking

01:01 <+Riddell> < rhkfin> QUESTION: does KDE have a community manager, if, who?
01:01 <+Riddell> not that I know of, one of the charms of KDE is it’s quite non-heirarchical and everybody gets on well with everyone else with very few exceptions, it’s a great community to be in01:03
01:03 < Riddell> rhkfin: you only need community managers if you hae a dysfunctional community

Way to go KDE, and thanks for 4.3.3
