I’m not quite sure where I got the idea. Maybe it was The Simple Marriage blog writing a guide to creating a simple home and talking about decluttering.

The trailer for the installation SELF-PORTRAIT by Timo Wright. He took photos of all 3328 object he owns.
Average family owns around 10 000 objects. Sound’s like a lot. Three years ago I had over 50 pairs of socks. Add DVDs, books, CDs, spoons, forks, jeans, t-shirts, office items, cables, bed sheets, tools, underwear, plates, cables…
A year ago I saw a film of a Finnish family that decided to live a year without oil, see if it’s possible. Believe me, it is painful. If you have a change to see the film ‘Recipes for Disaster‘ somewhere, I warmly recommend it.
Then I bumped to the 100 thing challenge where people live with 100 (personal) items for full 12 months. Here’s his list of 100 items important enough to be kept.
What can I do?
I will get rid of 100 things I own. I don’t expect it to be too easy but I wish it will make me rethink how I relate to things I own and consume. Maybe I can also try to declutter our home a bit.
So here’s my photoset. I started with 2 CDs, 2 cell phone chargers and 4 books I will throw away, give away, sell. Mostly throw or give. If you’re interested , let me know.
I also started the decluttering today by reorganizing my music notes. 3 unorganized binders and a pile of paper turned into about 10 nice categories that will find their binders soon. Also I’m throwing away many music sheets, maybe that counts as one of the hundred things?
By the end of the year there will be 100 photos. Keep reminding me and it will happen.

Great.
How should I count and think about ‘treasures’? I mean 1000 old Amiga diskettes sealed to one box labeled “Do not open until 2020″. Even I throw box away it doesn’t declutter anything. But there are much more aspects than that.
It’s up to you – if you think throwing the box away makes your house less cluttered, feel free to do it!
1000 Amiga diskettes, I suppose you have the computer too – but will there be any screens or television in 2020 that you can connect it to..
