Yes, it’s true & great news: Facebook chat can now be used over any XMPP / Jabber client, like Pidgin and Kopete.
Go to http://www.facebook.com/sitetour/chat.php to see your settings. Here’s a screenshot of the settings:

But..
no SSL
plaintext login onlyno federation
So kind of one-way street, once again.Appearing to support openness while staying closed.

You should take a look at OneSocialWeb, which extends XMPP in a federated social networking model. It’s due to release a reference server/client in a few weeks under an Apache 2 license.
I don’t want to blog-spam you with the article I wrote about it. Here’s a direct link, instead. http://onesocialweb.org/

I couldn’t get it to set up in Empathy, but Pidgin connects just fine. I kinda prefer Pidgin anyway.

I’m happy with using the pidgin-facebookchat plugin. Since I generally prefer Pidgin to Empathy as well.

Risto,
From the … ahem … About page on the linked site:
“The purpose of onesocialweb is to enable free, open, and decentralized social applications on the web. Its protocol can be used to turn any XMPP server into a full fledged social network, participating in the onesocialweb federation. The suite of extensions covers all the usual social networking use cases such as user profiles, relationships, activity streams and third party applications. In addition, it provides support for fine grained access control, realtime notification and collaboration.” -
I managed to connect, can see friends when they log in etc., but the moment I try to send a message to any of them, they simply go “offline”, that is vanish from my buddy list in Pidgin and, of course, no message ever managed to go through :(
