Kustomizer 0.3 for Openmoko 2008.12

Kustomizer 0.3

Kustomizer 0.3

If you want to use Freerunner with OM2008.12 as a usable phone and music player and internet device and gps device then there’s so many things you have to install and configure before it’s usable. It took me a lot of time to get everything installed and configured (and there’s still some things to do). But now there’s the Kustomizer, maybe this can make life a little easier. M.K@community

And that’s the reason there’s a new release that has again some new features and that fixes some of the bugs 0.2 had. Just to make life a little easier.

UPDATE – You can also try Kustomizer 0.35 that has a major bug fixed that prevented many apps from installing.

I know that the Openmoko distribution is a sinking boat and I should abandon it for Debian or FSO/SHR. But since I haven’t made that change yet, and even if I would, I need an easy way to return my Freerunner to a ~usable state where GSM, GPRS, GPS, aGPS and WLAN work. That’s what Kustomizer tries to do. I do hope this will be the last major Kustomizer version for OM 2008.12 but you never know. Feel free to develop it further, change it to suit your needs! • GSM registration takes a long time

Hope it’s useful for you :)

  1. just a heads up, use ‘lsof’ to see whats blocking /dev/dsp or /dev/snd/*

Thank you so much for this wonderfull script. It gave me back my interest in Openmoko, ’cause it’s usable as a daily phone.
I use it since Kustomizer 0.1 and did it also with a Freerunner of a friend of mine. He also is very enthusiastic.

    Thank you, again

  3. @Joseph: thanks! If this still is an issue, I’ll try to find out the bad guy with lsof. It _should_ now be fixed but we’ll see.

@Tom: Nice to hear if you like it! I myself use it more as a daily toy than phone but this takes me a bit closer to daily phone usage. I’m hoping to have the time to have a look at shr/fso/debian – I’ve understood that they should be the direction that’s not planned to be dropped..

  4. MadJo says:

for some reason Kustomizer 0.2 failed for me. Not sure why, but it installs all sorts of applications, but no icons appear on the screen. When I get home, I’ll try 0.3 and see if the problem persists.

I really want to use my Openmoko as a daily phone (right now I’m working on a second-hand Blackberry (but without the blackberry services) and I hate it) :)

  5. @MadJo: it’d help to see the log but I guess the reason is either that you didn’t have a working internet connection in Freerunner when running it or opkg.org packages were not available. It looks like it’s installing applications but many of them might fail so in the end they are not installed, if the package is broken or something. I hope 0.3 will work better for you. I wasn’t happy with it (everything didn’t work as I expected :) so I already made some changes there and the latest version is available at http://www.kurppa.fi/freerunner/kustomizer_devel

  6. Lars says:

    Hi,

I tried your version 0.35 and that is a lot better than 0.3.
There are still some things that will not install but all in all it seems to work very well.
Only thing that bothers me is that i can’t get google street maps to work in tango gps. It does download and make som png files but the seem to be empty. maybe the url is not correct or something.

Anyway i hope you keep up the good work.

  7. @Lars:

I really love to hear ‘a lot better thatn 0.3′ because that’s what I also thought. Google street doesn’t work for me either, I don’t know what’s wrong there. You might want to contact the tangogps author or something.

  8. nzidol says:

Just installing v 0.35 noticed there is a “/” missing around line 371 after “opkg install” enc_1.9 fails to install that way…

  9. @nzidol: Thanks! It’s true it’s missing but the installation still fails because the packages can’t be downloaded – for some reason Freerunner can’t access the site.
