I got an e-mail this morning publishing the results of a Maemo and Openmoko community survey I had answered with 1232 others some months ago. The survey was run by ETH, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich. Here are some notes I made.
Georg von Krogh, Matthias Stuermer, Sebastian Spaeth, Guido Hertel
“Results of Maemo and Openmoko Community Survey”
ETH Zurich, Chair of Strategic Management and Innovation, 2009
For the results go to http://public.smi.ethz.ch/files/MaemoOpenmoko/PublicDescriptiveStatistics.html
Here are some notes and highlights from me:
- Response rates 22.39% (=429 complete responses) for Maemo and 32.08% (=804 complete responses) for Openmoko.
- Openmoko people contribute a bit more (92.54%) than Maemo people (85.31%) because they think mobile device source code should be free.
- Many contribute because it’s fun: Maemo ‘agree’ or ‘strongly agree’ (33.33%+51.28%=) 84.61% and Openmoko (31.47%+54.98%=) 86.45%. Not bad!
- 14.22% of the Maemo people contribute because they are payed to do so (strongly agree or agree ), Openmoko 5.6%
- 40.33% of Maemo people got their device with a discount or free resp. 5.60% of Openmoko. Hmm..
- 7.23% of Maemo people got a free trip from Nokia, 0.87% from Openmoko. Hmm..
- Open source activities of the company are well managed: strongly agree or agree for Nokia 51.05% and 34.95% for Openmoko.
- Funny enough, people trust Openmoko as a company more than Nokia: 66.80% vs. 58.98%
- On average people contribute more hours (5.07) weekly to the Openmoko community than to the Maemo community (4.47)
- Reading & writing to mailing lists & forums take most of the time: 33.32% for Maemo and 53.7% for Openmoko. Openmoko people, what’s wrong here?
- Testing & bug reporting take about as much time as chatting in the IRC. (Maemo 5.9% and 5.4%, Openmoko 7.9% and 7.9%)
- On average, Openmoko people are 3 years younger than Maemo people (30.45 years vs 33.78 years).
- Most replyes came from US (20.51% Maemo and 22.51% for OM) and Germany (10.72% Maemo and 15.92% for Openmoko). 6.76% and 1.37% from Finland – you can see that Maemo origins from Finland.
- Maemo community is more educated than Openmoko: 46.62% of Maemo people have a Master’s or PhD vs 31.22% of Openmoko people.
I know that this is not a race between Openmoko and Maemo but both communities and community m anagers should have a good look at the results to know their community better and make it more productive. I just made these notes because it was easy and fun and it helps me understand better both communities or something. Anyway, thank you ETH for this survey!!
