  • St. Lucy’s Day
  • No, Saints are not popular in Finland or Scandinavia but for some reason St. Lucy is celebrated here, especially in the Swedish-speaking parts of Finland. For more information about the tradition, see Wikipedia. St. Lucy is elected every year by the readers of the HBL, the biggest Swedish-language newspaper in Finland in co-operation with Folkhälsan. Many schools elect their own St. Lucys.
  • It’s about bringing some light and joy to the darkness: the day is very short now (more about it 21th December :). It’s nowadays largely about collecting money for childcare and health care services.
  • I think it’s just a nice tradition with no religious meaning for me – and anyway, you don’t see St. Lucy at the University :/
