YK:n ihmisoikeuksien päivä
Nobelin palkintojen jako: Martti Ahtisaari saa tänään Nobelin rauhanpalkinnon. Onnea Martti! Ja suomalaiseen tapaan vähän kriittistäkin suhtautumista: voima.fi
Päivän kuva on Sarajevosta, Bosnia-Herzegovinasta, yhdeltä monista hautausmaista jonne on haudattu sekaisin muslimeja sekä kristittyjä. Suurin osa haudoista on 1990-luvulta: Sarajevon piirityksessä 1992-1996 kuoli noin 12 000 ihmistä. Bosnian ja koko Balkanin historia 1990 luvulla oli muutenkin erittäin verinen Jugoslavian hajoamissotien takia. Ihmisoikeuksia rikotaan sodissa usein erittäin räikeästi ja sumeilematta. Vapaus liikkua, oikeus asunnon, ruoan, vaatteet turvaavaan elintasoon jne jne.
Ahtisaari neuvotteli 1999 Milosevicin kanssa taistelujen lopettamisesta Kosovossa (SK) sekä toimi 2005 YK:n rauhanneuvottelijana ja erikoislähettiläänä selvittäen Kosovolle pysyvää statusta.

UN Human Rights Day
Today: Presentation Ceremony of the Nobel Prize – the previous Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari will be awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize “for his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts” (nobelprize.org)
The photo above is from Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Balkans, from one of the several graveyards there, where there are both muslim and christian graves. Most are from 1990s: about 12 000 died in the Siege of Sarejevo between the years 1992-1996. The 1990s of Bosnia and the Balkans has been very bloody because of the Yugoslav wars. In wars the Human Rights are very rarely respected. Freedom of movement, right for home, clothes, food and so on..
1999 Martti Ahtisaari negotiated with Slobodan Milošević to end the fighting in the Yugoslav province of Kosovo. 2005, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Ahtisaari as Special Envoy for the Kosovo status process which was to determine whether Kosovo, having been administered by the United Nations since 1999, should become independent or remain a province of Serbia.
